ATC
G'day all.
Just a little backgound on myself, seeing I'm new, fitter and turner by trade been programing/ operating cnc's for 16yrs, currently run 4 and 5axis turning centres.
The machine I'm building is 1400*760*320 (travel) + a axis, (B axis to come maybe) all ballscrew and linear rail. Gecko 203v drivers etc etc... It been a while collecting things and finding the time to build.
Just want to know has anyone made or have info to fit a auto tool changer to a 2.2kw e-bay spindle special? can't find any info about it. I may just have to wing it a build one?
cheers all

Hi D123,
Welcome to the forum and your input will be welcomed.
I am not aware of anyone building a ATC to the cheap spindles. The problem is the spindle is solid and most ATC's require a drawbar to tighten the collet. I have been in discussions were an EDM be used to hollow the spindle and a bicycle spoke (high tensile) used as part of the drawbar but it never eventuated.Cheers,
Rod

Since I have not got a spindle yet I havn't thought too hard about how to put an ATC on it. Just interested to see if it's been done to one of the e-bay ones.
thanks rodm for you reply, If, down the track I end up with an e-bay spindle and ATC working I'll post a thread about it.
BTW why use an EDM to put a 3-5mm hole through the spindle? Is it hardened all the way thru?

Well you have to use the tools you have at hand I guess. That is why I'm building a router for home, it will make life a lot easier for my hobby ideas that I have. Working with Mach3 and stepper motors is a first for me and I find it very interesting. Just eager to finish the machine so I can have a play at home!

No doubt there will be a big change from what you are used to but Mach3 and steppers are quite capable and probably much easier to set up than servos and proprietary operating systems.
Keep us posted on your progress.Cheers,
Rod
