Brass branding iron
I am after a cnc cut brass or stainless branding iron for branding the bottom of my wood turnings.
I two or three designs, can any of the CNC gurus assist/advise/ or do etc with a turner from over in the turning forum.Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working. — Pablo Picasso

Hi Hughie
the materials would be problem for me , a 20mm thick chunk of brass ?
also i would need to beable to draw it in CAD , the fonts you have chosen dont show in my CAD
also the size , would make the NAme 9.5mm high ( OK ) but the "The wooden Potter" ends up at about 4mm high and real thin
i googled , baranding irons , and changable letter ones are $25 ????

Hi hughie,
For your consideration, here is the appropriate page from the Rockler catalogue and a picture of my brand and date.
(If anyone wants to know what the box is for see the last box challenge.)

Material is not a problem I can supply Brass, HT ali - similar to brass, or stainless. Fonts, do you have any fonts that have a bit of hand written look to them, or better yet what fonts do you have.
As final wording etc its still up in the air, the only thing that would be nice if it was smaller than 9.5.

I tried but it is simply not possible to do that size in handwriting on a CNC machine in brass or stainless.
I have the font but...............
The tooling you would need would be so fine it would break trying to cut the pocket around the words.

This is what it would look like in 200 x 80mm with a 3 mm bit. Nowhere near clear enough.Every day is better than yesterday

i was thinking about using a V bit ( carbide die grinding ) brass cuts clean just lots of passes because of the zero thickness tip
i wonder how a Vcarve-photo cutting program would turn out on a branding iron ? (dots like a news paper photo )
, aluminium would burr ,
and stainless lol , my machine would go on strike
just tried again , and 80% of my fonts in CAD , default to the same crap plain font , so i would need a PDF of the art workhow come a 10mm peg dont fit in a 10mm hole

Aluminium does not burr with a good cutter, ramping and slow speed but for a branding iron, the lettering would have to stand proud and with a V-bit the pocketing would take ages to make.
I have just cut 20mm alu to rebuild my CNC but to get a decent cut, it took 41 x .5mm passes.
PhotoV-Carve does shallow cuts and it would not be suitable as a branding iron.
I think a rubber stamp would be a better idea.

a 0.3mm end mill would take ages ,
just run the letter 's "out line" 2mm deep with the V-bit , then change to a 4mm mill end , and work out the off set from the letter lines ( at 45deg , the off set would be 2mm on a 2mm cut , but would use a 30deg bit )
i believe its they type of aluminium that causes the burring , the 3050 was a lot better , than purehow come a 10mm peg dont fit in a 10mm hole

Hi Hughie,
Something like this?
That's 40x18mm with the small lettering at about 2.5mm high...

yes 0.3mm the letting is very small , 3mm high to get any detail it would have to be cutting brass with a bit the width of a hairhow come a 10mm peg dont fit in a 10mm hole
