I don't see why a timing belt would be an issue, all the industrial machines are rack and pinion on the X-axis rather than a screw; probably because a 3.6m long ballscrew would cost the GDP of a small country...

Obviously, a belt isn't rigid like a steel rack, but as long as it's properly tensioned to prevent it skipping a tooth you should be fine. You could even rig up a series of rollers around the cogs to physically stop the belt from skipping if you're really worried.

Thanks Elan. Agree re ball and screw but Rack and pinion are also exxyyy. (I’ve been pricing options). The reason I asked is there are a number of videos on the OX. build and most use acme thread. The kits available in OZ have belt drives.
i’m currently using Acme thread on my router build and with anti back lash fittings there is sweet $#@& in free play which is great.

Z axis is lead screw, X and Y are belt,

must x use's 2 belts, they call the Everman belt drive, its pretty solid, i'm thinking about converting the Y to lead screw, but honestly the belts have been fine, and have saved my a few time when i have crashed into the end stops.

See Here for Everman I just didnt have enough GT2 belt to do both Y Axis
