Hi Chris - yep that's exactly what it was! Rod pointed me in the direction last night and motors are now turning.
There does seem to be a certain lack of power, i think i need to tweak them a bit, the drivers don't seem to be hitting their optimal range just yet.

    cheers

Never seem to get as much done on the weekends as you plan!

I did managed to wire up the spindle and also attach it to the cnc along with all the steppers etc.
To keep things tidy i bought some cable chain from Ausxmods, so glad I did it, really makes a difference.

Not much more to go except for some little bits and peices, 'may' get it running this weekend.

    Cheers

Finally got it up and running today.

Just running some test gcode at around 2500mm.

Seems to run ok, but i think i need to tweak the motor settings a little more to get the most out of them.

    Well done Glenn.
I bet a couple of years ago you didn't think you could make a machine.
Your acceleration is good and the motors sound on song so from what I have seen it looks and sounds the part.
You are allowed to have the CNC grin for at least a couple of days.
    Cheers,
    Rod

That is one nice looking machine you have built there Glenn.

    Is that a European spindle?

Are you going to trim the bottom of the Z axis/ spindle mount plate?

What are you using for the table surface?

When doing the motor tuning, pay more attention to acceleration than rapid speed.

Overall performance, particularly with 3D and how well CV works, is very dependant on acceleration.

You should be able to produce some fine guitar work with that. Great job.

    Thanks Rod, yep... still grinning!

Greg the spindle is a Teckno 2kw air cooled spindle, the fan is powered separately so you can run the spindle at low rpms without over heating.

I got a great deal from DamenCNC.com Kevin the owner was great with helping me choose the right spindle which met all my needs, all up it took about 6 months of um'ing, rr'ing and saving. worth every cent.

I'll give it a shot with the acceleration speed and see how it comes up thanks for the guidance, I think I was going the wrong way about it and was focusing on the rapids more so.

One thing i have noticed is the motors are making a pulsing noise every 100 or so mm, almost like a spike or drop in current, i don't thinks its mechanical as it was doing it when i was testing the steppers off the machine so not sure what is going on there.

    thanks again

Forgot to add, not sure about the table top I'm thinking I'll just use mdf/ply and employ Rod's bed levelling system.

I actually need to do a bit of work on the z axis as I'm not all that happy with it, in hindsight I should have made it differently as i don't quite get the clearance i need. ideally i need around another 50 to 70mm to get the job done right.

I figured I'll get everything up and running then use the cnc to cut the replacement parts with.

    Cheers

Could be signal delays or interrupts from your computer. Run the driver test and look for spikes.
So long as it is not loosing steps then no biggy.
    Cheers,
    Rod
