CNC Machines for gear cutting
I own a Shark CNC router which I use for cutting wooden gears for my clocks. I have had lots of trouble with it
and am thinking of buying something else. Does anyone know of the OmniCam Industrial Computerised CNC
Router 2D PLUS sold by Red Dot Machinery ? Can anyone recomend a cnc machine?

Surprise surprise
You have problems with your Shark. Very few don't.
That plastic is absolute rubbish when one wants to cut something with reasonable precision.
I have just finished remaking mine in 20mm and 10mm aluminium it is now called "The Beast"
It works great now, I even cut most parts for the Beast on the Shark.
Slow work but satisfying when finished.Every day is better than yesterday

I am afraid that I am no fan of the Shark either.
Looks like the one your looking at from RedDot is the same as this ebay item,
CNC Router Engraver 500x400x90mm 24000rpm Spindle | eBay
Seems this seller takes a hefty deposit and then imports it from China on your behalf. How does the cost compare with RedDot?
A very quick cursory look at what is available came up with this one,
CNC 6090 Router MILL Engraver INC 1 5K Spindle VFD USB Ready | eBay
Add to this,
Mach3 $180
Cut2D $150
and you have what looks a reasonable router and bigger than the RedDot one.

Hi,
Also, if you purchase off ebay, many of these routers have a controller based around the dreaded Toshiba chips. They work OK when they work, but are very fragile.
You may want to consider striking a deal with the seller to supply the router without the controller but with the VFD. You could then put together a G540 based controller that will be much more robust and reliable.
I sell a G540 every week or so to someone who is replacing a Toshiba based controller that comes with these routers.

Hello Peter,
As my problems are with the Shark controller could one of yours replace it?

What's your problem with the controller?
Maybe I can help.
The software in the Shark controller is proprietary and parts can only be bought from NextWaveAutomatics in the States.Every day is better than yesterday

Tell me about it.
I have a Chinese machine I bought over 6 months ago and has never been used.
It's a long story but the long of the short is that the seller has stopped replying to my messages and, because my 90 days have expired, ebay cannot do a thing for me.
So much for 12 months warranty
I have a brand new Gecko 540 and a speed controller (forget what it is called) that I won as a doorprize at the FNQ BBQ from Homann Design
Problem is I am worried about fitting the parts into the control box I have.
I know the Shark inside out but am concerned about Mach3.
I have all the wiring instructions but every time I look at the thing, I lose confidence.
Call it Old Timers DiseaseEvery day is better than yesterday
Cheers

i had my chinese at the BBQ weekend, wasnt a working machine that day, i had a couple of settings issues and didnt bring the water pump for the spindle
like others, iv ripped out all the electrics from the controller box and cabling then replaced everything from Aussie suppliers, ie Pete & Chris,
it all looks daunting when you look at the drawings but once you get into it, its not that hard, put it this way if i can do it anyone can
you have some pretty switched on people in your area, Russell,Dave etc,
not forgetting members there on the forum
one other thing, when you do get the machine up and running, get your self a piece of 10mm alum plate and bolt down to the bed then machine it to give yourself a perfectly flat bed, you can bet the orginal wont be flat to the spindle.
cheers Tony
