David,I have used stain quite a bit as I find it is subtle and pleasing to the eye. The trick is to use sanding sealer before cutting then work the stain into the cut surface. Don't leave it too long before wiping off.
Cheers,
Rod

Might have to give stain a go, I have been using paint because that is what I had in the shed, also the old shelves had a finish on them.
I did a wookie for my son and you can see the process below

Hi Warrick, Here is a Numbat I did years ago with stain on an offcut of beach benchtop. That long ago the beach strips are delaminating but you get the idea. DCP_1413.JPG

The stain I use is Wattyl from the big green shed. It is very thin. I mostly use vcarve inlays and there is a tutorial you can follow on the vectric site.

The term 'grammar nazi' was invented to make people, who don't know their grammar, feel OK about being uneducated.

Ive been working on this " tag team " project for over 9 months , im not making it , a mate in New Zearland is making it ,
So all the CAD work was done by me , i ran the CAD files through CUT3D , and emailed the G-code 5000km so he could cut the patterns on his home made CNC machine , then sand cast the parts and build it
He dosnt have the drawing skills or the software to code for 3D
all the body is cast in aluminum
the cogs and cranks are steel
valves are brass
yes this will pump liquids when finished and is a scaled size of the original 1920's " myers bulldozer pump "
the full project is here >Myers bulldozer pump
myerspump.jpghow come a 10mm peg dont fit in a 10mm hole

Machined a control panel for an arcade cabinet not long ago, my first time machining acrylic and it cut beautifully, also painting the underside of the acrylic turned out better than expected.
