Default Don't you just hate those horrible noises

I make a few small items that I sell through a local gift shop. There is very little profit in it for me (the shop owner gets nearly all of that), so I can't afford to spend too much time or any more material on jobs than necessary.

The other day I set up a job, started the cut .. all went was going well ... walked away to do something else and heard the spindle start to lug down.

By the time I got there and pressed the big red button it was way too late.

I found a Z axis coupling screw had come loose. There must have been more resistance in the coupling in one direction than the other because the Z axis was moving down but not up, and just going deeper and deeper.

That's something else to add to my regular maintenance list.

    Hi Kev
All too familiar those horrible noises. For me mostly when the job is not clamped enough.
Thanks for the reminder about bits coming loose, it's about time I gave my machine the once over.

    Cheers

    Hi Kev

    My sympathies.
A suggestion... have you thought of using stud lock or similar to lock the screws, nuts, bolts etc in position. It really does work well.

Yeah Bob I have some loctite screw lock, and I thought about using it.

I decided I'd nip it up again and keep an eye on it. If it works loose again I'll definitely use it.

    Cheers

OK. I hope that you aren't working on something expensive at that time. What am I saying, of course you will be.... Sod's law.

Yep know that sound well... usually followed by alot of profanity eminating from my garage.. Not sure if I should warn the neighbours about the machine operations noises or the machine operators noises

List on f ups causing noise at my place:
    bad clamping
    dull bits
    ambitious cut speeds
and last but not least.. finding "undocumented features" in various s/w packages
