    Default V Groove bits

    Hi.

Any general rules of thumb for deciding feeds and speeds for Vee Groove Bits? eg carbitool T6128 1/2

    Thanks,
    Rob.

There are a lot of variables: rpm, depth of cut, material being cut, motor power
If you can give us some more info it'll give us somewhere to start

    hi.

I think i have a 2.2kw watercooled spindle - material for a start will be mdf - though for inlays - later - various timbers hard & soft and IIRC v carve inlays go to about 3mm.

First off I just want a loose grid on the work top mdf - not deep at all little more than lines.

    I have this bit:

Plenty of power for what you want, so you don't have to worry about that, but if you're only going to be cutting a few mm deep you probably could have gone for a smaller bit and saved some money.

You can safely run it at 18k rpm. If you're just touching the surface to mark it, 10m/min should be quite safe; try experimenting around the 6-8m/min when cutting timber for a nice finish. You can probably go even faster, but there's a risk of breaking the fine point on the bit.
