Default Handibot - hand held CNC

Someone at this evenings Hackerspace meeting mentioned this one so I looked it up when I got home.

The Handibot is a hand held CNC router from the Shopbot people who make full size CNC routers.

It is supposed to be open source both hardware and software but so far, nothing is available. Might be one to keep and eye on.

there was a hand held router based one a year back , that had a LCD and 50x50 movement , look at the screen and move the rougher within 25mm of where it wants to be and it cuts accurate???black magic ?? , know's where you move it (inferred mouse in base ) and removes your rough movements , the LCD screen tells you where it needs to move , all up they were saying $300 for the router base to fit any router
how come a 10mm peg dont fit in a 10mm hole

That hand held router with the LCD was from the design lab at MIT. There was talk of making a commercial version but I guess that takes time.
It's mentioned as an inspiration on the Handibot site.

    Default Beware crowd funding!

Scam artists are quick off the mark these days!

Shopbot have a Kickstarter project for funding design/supply of the Handibot,.
Interestingly, there was also a project (identical) started on Indiegogo. After someone checked with Shopbot about this, it turns out that the Indiegogo project was nothing to do with Shopbot and was a scam started up by someone else. Apparently it took some convincing to get Indiegogo to remove the project.
No indication that the scam site got any money from punters.

I have managed to get hold of an STP file for the Handibot.. Not a lot of construction details but perhaps enough for an experienced CNC builder to make one (rodm, I'm looking at you )

i bet the first thing that happens is 4 mounting holes are made in the base , so you dont have to hold it for 2 hours while it cuts something in 3D

if its designed on an "open source" design , why cant another group crowd fund the making of them ,as long as they post there design changes ,
lol rodm. will be upset his crowd funding was shut down , lol

Some time ago I saw a video of a machine that used vacuum venturis to hold a small machine to vertical walls. Worked very well and that would be my preference if I was going to build one - but I'm not.
    Cheers,

1: Needs a fitting for sucking up dust & shavings.
2: Needs a pair of flanges & friction pads so it can be quickly clamped in place as someone has already observed.

I always worry about major 'crowd funding' projects - things like data security, continued support if there are quality problems with the goods supplied......

There are a number of videos of the various handibot in action, one that doesn't need to be handheld is called the Handibot Creeper.

Default New (well I will be in December) HandiBot owner

My wife and I pulled the trigger at the $2400.00 level of the Kickstarter campaign and should be getting our HandiBot in December. I would love to start learning about what CAD programs people have been using. The unit comes with a Proprietary software and they are talking Apps.

I would appreciate any info that you can provide.

    Welcome to the forum.

Seeing that noone has yet received a Handibot, think the Handibot website is the best (only?) place to find information about it..
Assuming that it can use g-code generated with another program, then it might be worth while taking a look at the offerings from Vectric, (Aspire, Cut3D, etc). Lots of users of those in this and other CNC forums.
