HF Spindle/s
Hello Group
I didn't take a photo so I don't have any " evidence ".
On Sat' I was fitting a Chinese HF spindle to my router, I removed the end with the electrical connector on and found the earth wire was about 1mm in dia', multi strand copper wire, but only one strand was held under the screw fixing the earth wire to the frame. The wire was twisted by hand and wrapped around the screw, all the strands but one were not fixed to the frame.
That has been fixed but for the sake of removing 4 bolts it could be an easy check to make. I'm guessing that if the spindle body isn't earthed then if one phase is in contact with the spindle body and the router frame isn't earthed you might be the path of least resistance.

Hi Ed,
Well on mine the earth pin at the spindle went to air - nothing connected to it on the motor side at all. I am going to run an earth from the VFD to the frame where the spindle is being mounted. I was wondering if they had invented wirless earth?
Thanks for the heads up on that and I should have posted something myself but my reputation for electrics is not good so better coming from somebody else.Cheers,
Rod

Going on Ed's as well as Rod's experience it sounds like a good idea to check carefully before wiring up these Chinese spindles.
Mine was like Rod's in that the fourth connector was not connected to the body as you would expect.
I connected the fourth wire in the shielded cable to the spindle ground externally. To the spindle mount. This is also connected to the earth connection of the VFD.
Incidentally the outer shield is also connected to the earth at the VFD end only.

Hi Ch4iS
Not too sure but your anti static strap will have a resitor to stop you from electrocuting yourself... The strap only provides a path to ground not a short circuit.
BobTDon't argue with idiots, they only drag you down to their level then beat you with experience.

Water or Air Cooled?
Hi,
I looking to purchase an 0.8KW Chinese High speed spindle + VFD.
I understand that the Water cooled one will be quieter but more complex to set up due to the water cooling.
Does anyone have experience with the air cooled one with regard to just how noisy they are?
Any other comments or suggestions are also welcome. I plan to use it on a Romaxx 24" x16" CNC router.

Cheers,
Peter.

Hi Bob,
Thanks for the link. I had a look at the Video and think I'll go for the water cooled one. (Maybe)
Cheers,
Peter.
