Kiosk PCs in Brissy
Just in case anyone is interested there is a thread on the Mechmate site about these kiosks that are selling very cheap.
If I was in Brissy I would grab a couple of them. Price for PC and touch panel LCD alone would be a bargain.

Saw that post yesterday and wished was in brissy. lol.
The sit down ones sound interesting, that way you have somewhere to sit, watch and drink a beer while your machine does its thing.

They are a good buy.
Doubt you could get the materials and make the cabinet for that price.Cheers,

They also have them in Sydney. The company is called Computer Source, 02 9648 4753. They cost $250 and are of course second hand.
I bought one today and it weighs a ton! Only got home in the dark tonight so haven't looked at it depth, but I worked on the basis that the touch screen by itself is worth more than the $250, and the jury is out as to whether I will keep the box. The box is very well made, but at the moment I can't get the screen section opened as it has a funny key, which they did not supply!

No mention of the kiosks on their website but they do show up on their eBay site.
The desktop computers listed would make a good home for Mach3 (or EMC2)Geoff

Greg,
They list a Melbourne site for pick up on their ebay listing.
Shame there isn't one in Perth but if there was I would have to drop the Modio Console
To take this OT I am spending next Wednesday at an Electronic Engineer's place and he will show me how to hook up everything. I will then put it in English and start the thread.Cheers,

I fired up my kiosk today and it works a treat. The touch screen works well and very clear. I am not sure if the supplied computer will work with Mac3 and Aspire, but will load them up hopefully tomorrow and see if it works OK.
The computer is a Celeron CPU 2.00Ghz with 256M of Ram and a 40MB HD. Will this work? Being a Macintosh user for the last 25 years I have some difficulty with these boat anchors (sorry, PC's!!).
The kiosk has some sort of power supply and a thermal printer, which even has a roll of thermal paper in it. Not that I wanted a printer in the workshop, but I can't get it to work ... it feeds the paper and cuts off about 50mm when you press a button on top, but no printing of anything! Any suggestions?
The actual kiosk is very well made with very solid metal sheeting with fold out doors for the computer, and a fold up section for the screen and even has a base of 6mm metal, so it is very stable. They were evidently used at airports to produce some form of tickets or something.
Will take some photo's so you can see what I am talking about.
Cheers,

Hi Gaza,
The hardest part of building a machine is the mechanicals. Get the machine built and the incentive to finish it off will drive the electronics. The forums will provide plenty of help to hook it up.Cheers,

I had this given to me last night.
Going to convert it to a arcade machine, Juke Box for the kids. The LED light effects avaialble now are cheap and great so will jazz it up a bit with a few of those.
Ross's Auctions was the source if anyone over here wants to follow up on them.Cheers,

Rod,
The one I bought is the stand up model ... no keyboard or roller ball. I have increased it's height by putting wheels under it, pulled out the printer and yesterday I replaced the shelf with one to suit my keyboard and mouse. Am working on a subsidiary control panel that will sit at an angle just under the touch screen. Will post some photo's when finished. I am planning to tether it to the table with a square metal bar that will also be used to wrap the cables etc. I wanted a permanent 'tether' just so if I got excited and moved the console too far on it's wheels I didn't pull all the wired out (ouch!!).
Cheers,

Hi Alan,
I am very interested to see your modifications. Just a thought you could tether it with a wire cable or chain restricting movement to electrical cable length. Some of those rope climbing connectors would make easy connections.
I found out the black box inside is a power conditioner but you have probably worked that out.
SWMBO said to fill the hard drive with 50's and 60's music then lock it - smart woman. These kiosks have so much potential my mind is running amuck with ideas at the moment.Cheers,

Rod,
The reason I went to a metal rod for tethering, was also to stop the console bumping into the table ... a bit like a console arm, but with the console weight transferred directly to the floor. Anyway when I get a chance to finish it, I will post some photos.
Alan
PS ... I have tried to get the console computer to talk to my other workshop computer wirelessly ... but 'canna doit'. Do you have any ideas? A4 out of 3 people have trouble with fractions.

Aaaah an articulated tethered console - has a nice sound to it.
Sorry I haven't got my Kiosk running yet - Windows is loaded but I have to go through the verification process and it doesn't have a Windows key with it.
Is the little grey bubble on the top the wireless thingo?Cheers,
Rod

I have not fitted my articulated tethering thing-a-me yet, but have fitted my new shelf to take the keyboard and a bubble on the rhs for the mouse. The mini control panel is roughed in complete with joysticks and VFD panel ... an aluminium face will go right across the front with some extra switches in it (that's what the holes are for!) and I have brought 2 USB sockets to the rhs, again a small aluminium panel will finish those off.
Now onto my articulated tethering thing-a-me!
Cheers,
Alan
