regards to a desktop laser i would recommend sticking with a new laser unless you can guarentee it was well looked after and hasn't had huge amounts of running time. The lasers tubes are rated for so many hours and as they get older they can start having issue with cutting/engraving capabilities. Not to mention their lenses and focus assembly.

I would speak with companies like gravograph and epilog, both have great machines and australian offices. They might be dearer than a cheaper chinese machine but are well worth it, especially if you want to make it into a small business as you have local support and training too. Both companies also sell secondhand machines they refurb so it might be worth asking what they have.

Someone else might be able to elaborate on suppliers and such and give more detail but i hope this gets you going.

***EDIT - BTW, if you can, try to get one with air assist and a good vacuum. They come like this most of the time but some cheap models and older ones don't. The air assist gives you a better cut for certain things and the vacuum removes the smoke which if it gets in the way of your lenses can heat up and actually crack the lenses.

If you get hold of Woodenink (Amos) he has one and did a lot of work to get it going he may be able to help you.

when you talk about boxes what sixe are you talking how big a working area do you need 15-20cm?

the boxes are the single and double pen boxes mainly.
the area for work .250mm x 250mm , or close to that.
Also want to engrave pens
