Masso CNC - Retrofitting my CNC Lathe "Electtronica Veneta"
After 7 years i finally have started the refit of a CNC lathe "Electtronica Veneta" that i bought. The lathe ran an old discreet controller and is just not suitable with "today" CAD system output.
I started the refit with the traditional MACH3 and GECKO setup, but the PC needed to run the system didn't fit nicely in the available space and MACH3 has other limitations around supporting 1 pulse per spindle revolution, so thread cutting is somewhat limited.
I ventured down the path of a discreet system that was small and had everything combined - PC and Motion Controller. I bought a MASSO CNC Controller (support local & Australian right!!) as it seemed to be a suitable product, but as I have found it has a few features lacking. (Backlash compensation for a start), however, I think it has a future and I want to be part of this.
Here are images of the MASSO controller connected to the Gecko G201 stepper drivers. I have it hooked up to 3 drivers, but reality is the MASSO in lathe mode only supports 2 Axis (X and Z). There is no A Axis support for my tool change and MASSO currently only supports DC motors on tool changers

Spindle Motor Drive
The spindle motor also ran antiquated electronics. After a bit of schematic cruising and Multimeter probing, we worked out the motor was driven at 220V DC.
The following motor driver was bought to replace the old with hopefully new electronics that would work and last for quite a few years.

The idea is to drive the MASSO linear output (0-10V) to adjust the speed of the spindle motor via GCode (M3/M4/M5 commands). To enable forward and reverse will require more thought as this is not a native option in the controller and is configured by relays.
Here is the old system board:

Tool Changer
I've just ordered a PLC system that I am hoping to configure to drive the rotary tool changer. The MASSO CNC software doesn't support my configuration for this at this time and I don't believe they are likely to develop this support in their software.
The tool changer is running a stepper motor which runs a worm gear (26:1) to select one of 4 tool positions. The tool changer has a cam-lock system that allows the tool changer to drive over and then requires the tool to be driven backward momentarily to lock it on to the stop. This gives the tool the correct centre height and allows the tool loads to be transferred to the tool post and carriage.
Here is a link to the PLC system I just bought. It will have a screen on it to allow manual operation of the tool changer as well as the CNC control. The PLC will be used to provide Step/Direction input to the Gecko G201 via "T" commands in the code.
This will be interesting as I have never programmed a PLC. Wish me luck!!
