    Default Cost of BYO

Adding up the cost of my build came close to what I had guesstimated.
Ok it was a fair bit over if I add on all the extra tools I bought, drill press and drop saw etc to complete the job. I could even add the new shed but it gets too scary then.
A lot of this was bought last year so some costs may not be that relevant with the change in Aussie dollar.
    My machine by the way has a 700mm x 550mm x 130mm cutting envelope.

    steel $500.00
    Aluminium $545.60
    steppers and power supply $667.00
    rails,bearings,ball screws $723.90
    smoothstpper,chiller,cable $287.00
    cable chain $40.00
    fasteners $263.30
    enclosure $270.00
    spindle,vfd $644.00
    pc video card $65.00
    db9 breakout,plug,socket $56.78
    laser $8.96
    software Mach3 $175.00
    VCarve$579.00
    other electrical components $405.27
    Total $5,230.81

I hope this helps anyone deciding to build or buy.
    Cheers
    Brian

Yikes - just the parts list alone is enough to scare me off

How long did it take for you to go from first parts purchased to running machine?

    Hi Russell,
It has been 12 months since buying the first parts and it is only just running now. I still have to work out an enclosure and dust extraction for it but I would have to that with a bought machine.

Its funny when you speak to people just starting out, its never long before the first question of build costs, my first response is always it depends on what you want...but for a decent machine be expecting 3-5k not including software. Then the question of time, so your post shows this well and will be a great post for beginners.

Just for your own sake, try and add up the hours then times that by say $40 (a cheap cost of labour). You'll be shocked but start to understand why machines costs so much.

I probably should also say that as I am an ABN holder the GST portion will be claimed back in my next BAS. Also as the machine's primary function will be to make parts out of polycarb for my fishing lures it is part of my business and fully claimable off my income, it all helps!

That would be the deciding factor for anyone planning to have an income from their machine. Having a working machine in six weeks would be a huge financial advantage over having to build one that could take a year.
For me building was just as much fun as using the machine.

    Cheers
