Default I need to spend some money on aluminium sheet

    Hello everyone

I have finished my testing and now think that I am ready to start cutting out the aluminium panels for my front yard.

The first two panels are 2140*600*6 and 2135*600*6 (5005 grade) respectively.

I got a price from Action aluminium here in Brisbane and I want to know what others think of the price they quoted me. I ask, because a short while ago I purchased an off cut from them and they charged me $6 a kilogram.

But now, when I want to purchase what will become three full sheets of 2400*1200*6 they have quoted me $430.10 inc per sheet. At a weight of 46 kilograms per sheet, that works out to $9.35 per kilogram.

Admittedly, there are three cuts they will have to make to get the pieces out of the sheet, but a premium of $3.35 per kilogram seems like a high price for them to rum the sheet through their saw. 10 minutes work at most.

Can anyone advise me of a cheaper place to buy this material or do you think that the price justified?

I just gave them a call to find out how much 10x160mm flatbar was, I had previously been quoted $360, $365 and $380 by my 3 local suppliers here in inverell so I put my ideas on the back burner, after seeing this thread I rang action aluminium and got quoted $120, I asked him to repeat while checking my hearing aids so I am pulling my plans back out, if you find a cheaper supplier then please post here but for the moment I think I will place an order with action aluminium

    Thanks Chris

That is a very good price. It works out to $6.90 a Kg. MUCH cheaper than I got.

Yea thats a good price for the bar, even cheaper than what I was quoted from the NSW store which was $37 + GST per/m

You'll probably find its + GST as they have always quoted ex GST when I ring up.

    Hi Ken
Tell you what, I will sell you the 3mm sheets for $400 and I will pay the freight to Darwin. that is of course, assuming a sheet size of 1200 * 2400 and standard 5005 grade. Buy 5 or more sheets and I will knock off another 10%.

That is right, I asked for a per meter price and he quote me $30+, so my original post is correct, like I said I had to check my ears

What's needed is for someone to start a trade account and have everyone order from this account. The more that goes through it would help

    1. Drive the buying price down
    2. Give people a consistent price per kg

I have just spent a bit on aluminium on my machine. I bought a sheet of 300 x 1200 x 12 for $138 ( with GST). This is also from action aluminium. This is 5083 H112 plate. I calculated the weight to be 11.33kg, which is $12Kg, so quite expensive??Not sure??

    Hi Mike
Not necessarily that expensive. That plate is a high strength alloy and is quite a bit more per Kg than 5005. You seem to have paid about 25% more for this aluminium than we would pay for standard. If you needed the extra strength then it is probably a reasonable premium.

Your suggestion for centralised buying is quite a good one. It may be worth following up. Between us we would probably purchase quite a lot of aluminium. They also sell Alcubond which some of us also use a bit of.

Edit: I forgot to say that I have opened an account with them. Cash only, but still an account.

i have to post this some were

ive been using a mist sprayer for cooling while cutting aluminium and it works perfectly ,
not that much water , none runs off the material onto the machine , a bit of spray from the mill end flicking water away, old towels around the job stop that from making a mess ,

i didnt want to use my last peace of PVC 10mm sheet as a sacrificial layer , so came up with the idea of oiling the partial board , so the water wont get in , seems to work fine , yer yer it will swell from the oil , but 2 even coats with a paint bush ? the swelling should be even if anything above bugger all ,

i wanted to use 16mm partical board because i get packing sheets for free from work , i cut up 10 sheets into 600x400 ( 120 of them ) last time they were going to dump a pallet of packing sheets

i milled a sacrificial sheet as a hold down jig , to line up some hollow aluminium louver blade offcuts , same spot every time , and then some pockets , so the cut out peaces can be filliped over and lined up for there "underside milling " so needed the jig to last 24 cuts , the pockets tend to fill up with water , and i didnt want the " level's " to change
