    Default Spindle coolant additive recommendations

    Hi there.

I recently got a 2.2Kw water cooled spindle up and running. For testing thus far I have used normal tap water. I would like to get some information on best practices and brand of additives available to use in AU. I have read that you should use distilled water and not tap water and that an anti-algae additive should be added to the water. I also recall reading somewhere that anti-freeze should be avoided as it can damage spindles in the long term.

    Opinions please?

    Thanks

    Mark

Anti-freeze has been in my spindle for around 3 years and no problems to date.

I've been using de-mineralised water + anti-freeze for a while now without issues. The mill doesn't do many long runs and it doesn't get used a great deal, so my choices may not have been the best.

Running the coolant pump for 15 mins once or twice a week to stir the tank will also help prevent algae growing

"Antifreeze, also called coolant, is the colored fluid (usually green or red) found in your radiator.
Antifreeze serves a few purposes. The most important is keeping the water in your radiator and engine from freezing in cold temps. It also keeps that same water from boiling over in the summer. Radiators are normally filled with a 50/50 mixture of antifreeze and water.

The third function of antifreeze, or coolant is lubrication -- it lubricates the moving parts it comes in contact with, like the water pump."

Thanks everyone for the feedback, and sorry for the delay, seems email notifications were going into never never land (all fixed now)

I landed up squirting some iodine into the water, thus far has worked without a hiccup and no algae growth - but I think I will take your advice and buy some green radiator fluid tomorrow.
