Wiring between stepper motors and the drivers
Hey folks. I have a Pacific Tooling PT6012 Router. I would have liked a wiring diagram when I bought it but they said it wasn't available. Hence, I have been slowly creating one for my machine.
During this process, I have noticed what seems to be an inconsistency. All of my stepper motors (I have a 4 axis machine) have red, green, blue and yellow wires.
For the Y & Z axes, yellow goes to the B+ terminal on the (Leadshine M542-05) drivers and the blue goes to the B- terminal. However, for my X & A axes, this is reversed i.e. yellow to B- and blue to B+.
My question is this, does this reversal matter? If it does, why are they reversed? The machine works fine like this but I'd still like to know (I'm like that )
Thanks in advance for any info.
Cheers
Doug

As far as i’m aware, swapping just the two wires will change the direction of rotation. You don’t have to swap all four. I can try it out if you like as I have one in the shed that’s easy to rewire.

Thanks heaps, that would be great. However, wouldn't that mean that the jog buttons (keyboard arrow keys) in Mach3 would be in the wrong direction in particular for the X axis? There's probably a setting in Mach3 to change this if needed. Certainly, my keyboard arrow keys jog each axis in the correct direction. Your thoughts?

Just confirmed. Mine is wired A+ red, A- blue. B+ green, B- Black. Router moves UP.
Swap the Red and Blue wires only and the router moves down.

Controlling the direction it just a matter of controlling the voltage on the DIR pin so if they changed from a positive voltage (high) to a ground (Low) it would change the direction. Easy to do in the software.

Well it seems your motor is different to mine because of the wires being different colours. However, the principle is the same. But you have swapped the A+ & A- whereas on mine it is the B+ & B- that are swapped. Would you mind testing them instead? Btw, what driver are you using?

I did swap B+ and B- wires as well and that also caused the stepper to change direction.
Wire colours can vary between manufacturers and even during production runs but they are usually one of three combinations for bi polar steppers, as shown here. The colours on mine are the most common.

I have used a number of different drivers; a H298 Low current, a TB6600 derivative ( HY-Div248-5A - which is not all that flash) and a DM542T which is brilliant.
Both do the same thing if you swap two wires.
Do all your steppers turn in the same direction ie CW OR ACW? I can easily change the direction of mine from a menu selection.

Thanks for confirming this. Between your responses and a couple I got on CNC Zone, it's confirmed for me that the reverse wiring is just a matter of motor direction. I can't confirm the CW or ACW because the machine is in a state of partial disassembly. I'm also installing a second hard limit switch on the X, Y and Z axes as the machine only came with one on each.
Thanks again for your help
PS I had a lookat the link you provided and the colour code of my wiring is different again.....red, yellow, blue and greenLast edited by Dougsshed; 12th October 2018 at 08:41 PM. Reason: Additional info available

Seems they sure do vary.

They usually have information on the side of the drive indicating the dip switch info

These are the switch settings on my 542T driver, It has 8 switches.

My Tb6600 knock off only has 6 switches.
First 3 are for current limiting setting ; Last 3 are for divisions of steps eg. 1; 1/2; 1/4; 1/8; 1/16 etc.
They vary so you would need to be specific for your driver
