Clean Planing
For a long time now I have wanted to be able to plane doors without making a huge mess.
The mess side is really important as reflects my ability, and can save the time and damage involved in taking a door off the frame. I have used a plane with out any dust extraction (thankfully on a wooden floor) and did I make a mess. The next step was to use a dust bag. Made a big difference but not always practical. After a few passes the bag needed emptying. The third step was to hold or try and squeeze the hose of the dust extractor/vacuum cleaner into the ejection chute of the plane. Again the amount of mess was reduced, but still not perfect plus the safety factor of trying to hold the hose in and not controlling the plane.
Today I was able to try another method and was very impressed with the results, so impressed I did not even attempt to clean the floor afterwards. I used the Festool EHL 65 plane FESTOOL One handed planer (EHL 65 EQ Plus) for $582.00 – Ideal Tools - FESTOOL Shop and User Knowledge Base. Plus TORMEK, WALKO, WSE, PROTOOL. with a Festool Midi FESTOOL Dust extractor (CT MIDI AUS Set) for $890.00 – Ideal Tools - FESTOOL Shop and User Knowledge Base. Plus TORMEK, WALKO, WSE, PROTOOL.
At last I could concentrate on controlling the plane and not be surrounded by shavings and dust. I took about 3mm off a door and was surprised at not covering the floor with at least fine dust. While this may not be for everyone, as a handyman, it was worth the expense.
I have no connection with any of the companies mentioned and receive no compensation for this review.
