Thread: First and possibly only restoration of my life

First task is the mirror.

The claws are too small for the thickness of the mirror and the plywood. So I had to cut down the plywood. Now the mirror fits perfectly and the claws are polished. I also added a piece of wood to strengthen the plywood.

Next is the stool.

I decided to pull the whole thing apart, and rework all the components. Cutting the dominos was a bit of a challenge. With a bit of imagination and the help of my daughter it is done.

Scott, my mum had the same stool, it was part of a art deco dressing table with side drawers, curved front doors on each side and a back mirror not unlike in your picture. Sadly no one wanted it when she passed and we had already absorbed two houses of furniture before that so it was scrapped along with a huge art deco wardrobe.

Chris, my mother-in-law still has 2 other pieces in her house (next door). I will show you some pictures tomorrow.

It is great to see such pieces being kept and made useful. I admire your skilful use of the Domino, mine is more hit and miss, but then I don't get much practice at it.

No clamps no worries. Some old bicycle tyre tubes will do the trick.

First time I did upholstery and I think I did OK.

That is the stool done. Next will be the dresser itself. It is going to be a lot of sanding which is pretty boring. I am not excited about it.

Very damned similar but Mum's had highly figured veneered doors.

The dovetails are a bit more presentable now. I glued a piece of timber at the corners of the drawers to improve the strength.

The mirror is more then 10kg so the 2 nuts and bolts are never going to be strong enough the hold the mirror at an angle. A circular knob which rotates slightly off centre will do the job.
