Thread: Stanley number 1

Hi there. I have used 6" bullet head nails (they are the right diameter) and 12/20 die to make replacement studs for my Stanley hand planes. Once you make the stud you can measure the angle.

Just a thought.
Have you tried a stud from a #3 or #4 to see if they are the same thread?
If they are that would give you the angle and the need to thread only one end after shortening.

Nice way to get a No1 . It should have been a decent amount cheaper than a complete one.


Will you be using BRW or a substitute timber for the tote?
Proper BRW is a bit hard to get hold of.

The studs on the larger planes are not a match, they are much larger 12-20.
The No 1's stud is 7/64" so far I have not been able to cut a thread to test on the plane.

Thanks Mark. I only have experience with #3 - #7. Knowing what I do about the #1 (which is very little), I am not surprised that things are scaled down.

I tried a number of threads until I found the one that worked.
8-32 and it is angled at 22 degrees.
