    Default What have I done?

table.jpgDoes anybody know anything about antiques?
I have a side table with one drawer and two shelves which I started to sand ready to refinish.
    I did the drawer last.
Inside the drawer, written in pencil, is 8/11/44. Possibly when it was made.
My concern is that I may have devalued this by sanding it down.

Hi Ozcee and welcome to the forum. There are many answers to your question and you may well have reignited the age-old debate on REfinishing, REstoring, REpairing and REvaluing antiques?
Firstly, your piece does not appear to be an antique and so “devaluing” it will depend on what it looked like before you sanded it? If the original finish was damaged to the point where you couldn’t live with it, then refinishing it will clearly add value TO YOU. If you intend to sell it, and it isn’t an antique in the first place, then you will most probably find that it hasnt been worth the effort. However, IF it had been an antique then sanding it back and refinishing it will definitely have destroyed its value.

It might have been worth something if it said 8/11/2044.
