1954 Mercedes 300SL Gullwing.

The inclination to have a go at making one of these great Mercedes came from , silverlux making a Delorean with gullwings. I may have bitten off more than I can chew with regard to the chassis and the beautiful body shape. Internet searches gave me heaps of detail, settled on a 10 to 1 scale . Made some sketches of the finished size and shape I will work to. The wheels were fairly simple turning job with the slots cut with a 1/8 router bit , set up on the indexing on the lathe with a sliding router , which has been used on previous wheels. 6 1/2 hours for 5 compared with 25 hours for the MG wheels.
I intend to go to a fair bit of detail , independent suspension , the chassis of the 300 SL is a space frame of tubular steel , I hope to get it made of 4mm dowell. I don't have actual plans to work to , each part or section I work out how to make it as I go along. Some photos of work to date. John.

Looking forward to this one.....always was a car modeler as a youth...plastic of course.

I just picked up a diecast Ferrari kit from Revival.....since it's metal I'll probably log the build elsewhere but my BR-18 Steam Locomotive is mostly wood.

Rear suspension, trailing arms? will be done with the chassis. Mounted on a board to obtain measurements and position of motor , and transmission etc.
They will be a couple of weeks away as I have some boxes to make. John.

Got rid of that box job very quickly, now back to the Mercedes. The motor is inclined 40 degrees , various timbers used, red cedar, huon, sassafras and jelutong. The dark spots on the cedar is super glue which does not show up under lacquer. Will have to make new fan blades as they look too small. This model goes into hibernation for the winter months , Queensland beckons us at this time each year. Will take the model with me , some 4 mm dowel , super glue etc , to play with the chassis.
