    Wink #25 Fire Truck

    Hi all,

Not much to show here yet, but I got alot of fantastic advice in my previous thread (Using Toys and Joys plans) about how to approach using T&Js designs.

    36814474_10155440142606646_8795944497943937024_n.jpg

I got to spend a few hours over the weekend wrapping my head around how to approach it and getting the rough cuts done for the base, sides, grill, cab top, plus the blocks to eventually support the ladder.

I have to get the slots cut out of the base for the wheels and then get everything trimmed to size. Then add a few holes for windows and dowels to hold ladders and bevel the edges before I try to tackle making the ladders (3 of them!).

I'm not super happy about the 'U' shapes in the side panels. Alexkara suggested a spindle sander was a useful tool for these models and now I fully understand why. My cheap little ozito rotary tool with sander attachment just wasn't up to the job of cleaning up my average scrollwork. I'd like to blame the hard Blackwood I was using but let's be honest, it was user error . But as this is the second thing I've built ever (workbench being the first) I'll cut myself a little slack.

I'm hoping to get a bit more time next weekend to work on it, but with a one year old at home, finding time to use the tools during reasonable hours can be more challenging than the project itself.

    Cheers,

    Furns

    Looking good!!!
A dowel with some fine sand paper glued to it can do wonders to them round thingy's.
I say glue because I get tired of holding the paper to the wood and once a tool is made it's there for next time.
    Just my $.02

Thanks htl that's genius! Although... perhaps the wife can be convinced that a spindle sander really is essential to make this toy perfect for our precious daughter....

    Furns,

Yes - a spindle sander is a fine piece of machinery. Good luck on that

Not only do I make toys and models I also am involved with woodturning I do something similar to HTL in as much I use double sided tape to hold the sandpaper to the dowel that way I find it easier to change it when it wears out.
A good start look forward to seeing the rest of the build

I found the easiest way to glue sand paper to dowel
is cut it into strips say 10mm wide and spiral it around the dowel.
I run these in my cordless drill and drill press also.
