Thread: 4-6-2 Tank Locomotive - Circa 1910

Hi All,

You may call me stupid - but that's OK. I have decided that this loco is missing something. Being a passenger locomotive - it needs a carriage. Decided that I will add an AB first and second class carriage to my loco. The overall length of loco and carriage will be 3.85 metres. It will fit along the width wall of our back room. Cathie is OK with it, but first off I need to put shelves in her quilting room. That might take a week. So when I finish the rear coupler I probably won't be on the loco for a while. However there are 24 hours in the day. Her shelves may get done a lot quicker

Attached are photos of the carriage and some interior photos - first and second class. I will be doing a full interior fitout. A bit excited about this. (I have been and got a photocopy of the actual size of the carriage I will be building - I probably am stupid)

This loco build will be going on for quite a while. Not doing the tracks yet - until both loco and carriage complete.

Just to give a bit more idea on the size of the carriage. This is the actual size the carriage will be behind my loco.

Have started on Cathies quilting shelves - I'm in the "good books". Should be back on loco and carriage very soon

Keith, Maybe on of the trailer blokes like Yonnee on the forum could do you a good deal o a covered trailer to transport all the rolling stock....I think you're going to need one very soon....Peter

Hi All,

Amazing how an incentive can get you obsessed with completing something to get it out of the way so you can get back to stuff you love doing.

After many hours of "overtime" (worst part was finding the studs - sometimes the stud detector worked and other times it didn't) - Cathie is now well pleased with the shelving in her quilting cupboard guys don't pick on my workmanship - wanted it done quickly. I may still have to put up a brand new line prop that has been taken up valuable shed space for the last decade

Back to my loco - I have been talking with my mate Trev and he has suggested that I do the trackwork for the loco before I get onto the passenger carriage. Thanks Trev - I think it an excellent idea as I can then move the loco inside and use the stand I have made up for the loco as my stand for the carriage.

I will make the track sections into 2 separate removable sections - one for the loco, one for the passenger carriage. I will make up enough track, sleepers, rail clamps and fishplates to suit both the loco and carriage and then paint the components so I won't get a paint colour mixup and also arrange enough ballast to complete it all. The carriage trackwork won't be completed until after the carriage is.

By working on the track it also gives me time to do more research on the carriage. I understand there may be a photo opportunity for the carriage up at Maldon/Castlemaine and there are also some old carriages at the Newport Railway Museum. I think I need to get as many photos as I can to getting it looking as being the correct era.

If I get bored on the track I can start turning up the bogie wheels as I have sufficient info on them - they were spoked not solid (as they are now).

Get onto the locos Dave - it's a great incentive to get the other stuff out of the way - although Cathie has been onto me for 12 months - can't rush her things
