Bret it is this chuck http://www.axminster.co.uk/axminster...em-prod783378/ with a bolt pushed through the back. Very handy for small parts and you can buy extra inserts of different sizes.

Very cool Derek. Will have to add that to my wish list. My poor mans way is a round piece of wood with a carriage bolt of the right size pushed through the back and then chucked. Although they are bit pricey I'm sure they will pay for themselves in the long run

Bret That's how I got mine on my christmas wish list
Anyway some more bits done. Managed to get the logs and there supports made today along with the cab roof. Also another dry fit of parts made so far.
Bret notice the blue lathe in the first picture

Looks great Derek. Are the barrels going to have mounts similar to the logs? What is the blue machine in the background? Another drill press or perhaps a mortiser? It was not on the bench in your shop photos.

The mount for the barrels is the next job followed by the axles. The blue machine is a bench morticer brought for £30 GBP still a current model costing £179 GBP. Added after the photo's

Well a little more done today had to drill out the wheel holes a little larger to suit the axle rods yet to be cut, as the holes were left at the hole saw pilot until I had the axles(no pictures as they don't look much different).
Also made the barrel cradles, and drilled the axle holes in the main carriage. These were drilled from both sides so to make sure there was no drill wander, I think the extra time spent marking out is worth it in the end.

Well this is the last lot of pictures now until I have glued and finished the trains.
Spent today mainly sanding taking all the sharp angles off and refining a couple of bits, also cut all the axles. Made the buffers and drilled there holes, the hole in the bottom of the engine frame is to hide the knot from the pull string(hole to be drilled in the front once I get the pull string).
The last picture is all the parts of 1 train.

Well finished at last. The finishing can take as long as the build sometimes.
All the wood came from the scrap bin and recycled wood.

They look fantastic. Great job Derek. The little ones will love them. So whats the next project? Firetruck...

Thank you Crowie. It is finished with Polyvine satin varnish. As of yet recipient unknown they will go onto wifes stall when I tell her
