    Default A bj383ss Loco it ain't WIP

I thought it about time I started something in the toy making section well here is the beginning. Originally started some time ago(I will not embarrass myself by saying how long but Bob Has seen the start) on another forum.
So I will put the whole thing on here up to the last weeks offerings.
I think the title says it all so don't expect too much. I am making two at the same time so you are not seeing double
Started out by having a play on the lathe and turned the main lo funnels, domes, main boilers, carriage connectors and barrels

Next on the build is the frames to fit all the bits to. Followed by the cab which is cut from a solid piece as can be seen in the photo all drilled before putting onto the band saw. The final picture is the dry fit of the parts before any other work is done.
The next job is to complete the couplings and drill holes for the axles.
In the last post the picture of the boiler one has had the holes drilled for the funnel and dome I stopped there so as to take a photo of before and after.
That is all for the moment as this is as far as I have got up until now. May be the next model might even be a scale model that is after the train and the toybox I am 2/3rds of the way through(will post photo's when finished).

    G'Day Digger,
What a great looking couple of train you've made.
Some children will have hours of fum with them.
Are you going to paint them?
    Cheers, crowie

Looks great to me Derek. I am with Crowie how are you going to finish them. Are you going to build cars to go behind them as well? looking forward to the next installment.

Thank you both for your replies. I am thinking of a child safe varnish to finish them both.
Bret the 2 carriages are behind the main engine one carrying the barrels and the other may have logs or possible boxes (undecided as of yet) both being removable for that added extra fun.

A little more done today have drilled for the coupling pins and cut away so the carriage frames now join together. Only a dry fit again as most of the gluing will be done nearer the end of the build.
I also cut out some wheels in different sizes just to see which would look best. These were only cheap pine so now I have decided size and how I am going to make them(no photo)

Yet more work on the loco's. This time cutting the wheels and recesses I need 24 altogether
First I cut 1/2 way through with the outer diameter the done the outer mark for the recesses and finally the inner. Still got the cleaning up and rounding over so no sharp edges

Everything looks good Derek. What type of wood are you using? It looks like a oak.

    Hope so Crowie.
Had another look at the wheels and decided to use them just had to replace about 6 altogether. Spent the day by going to the wood yard and buying some beech for another project (nearly had a heart attack ME buy some wood ). When I got home set up to sand the wheels and take any sharp corners off, did this on the lathe as in the photo's

Looks good Derek. This is a different lathe than the one in your shop. Isn't it blue?

Well spotted Bret this is my second wood lathe the blue one is still there over to the left. This one is variable speed and small the blue one is a larger lathe
