Carousel horse
Have recently been looking through photos of some of my older projects and thought some members may be interested in my first attempt at a carousel horse after 15 years making rocking horses as a hobby.
This as usual is curtsy of Mr Google I find images I like, print them to A3-4 trace and sketch carving to my design.
When I am satisfied with the design I copy and paste into Cad and place a 10mm grid over the image and print. (you can also draw the grid in word and reinsert the grid sheet into printer and print image on top of grid).
I then decide on the final size I want the horse to be and work out the conversion factor to multiply the 10mm grid to
attain the finished size.
I use 3mm MDF cover sheet to draw the larger grid on then draw the image using the grid for accuracy, when its drawn full size
I make any modifications if it doesn't look right.
I then use paper lunch wrap to trace the profile & cut into patterns to mark onto 3mm MDF which I use to mark the timber.
Most of the timber sizes are worked out from my experience carving rocking horses.
I don't have a full set of photos showing all the construction but you can get the idea from these, the horse in the background also shows more.
This is a full size carousel horse carved both sides for outside row.

The painting is 2-3 undercoats then sanding around 10 times, then 3 white topcoats, pearl basecoat & 2 clearcoats.
Next airbrush colours with clearcoats, as I progress with the different colours I clearcoat the whole horse so if I do something I am not happy with I can remedy it without damaging previously painted.

Finished

I will load some of my other carousel horses over the next few days.

Thanks for the likes, thanks and especially the comments, it makes the effort posting to the forum worthwhile.
This horse with carved Griffins is another full size carousel horse 1750 nose-tail 1550 hoof- ear made around 2010.
You will notice the timber used in this horse is much better than the previous horse that was pretty rough Bunnings green sleepers 200x75 r/s, I dried them and then cut around the worst of the knots & flaws.
Since then I found a supplier for r/s 75x150 pine clears so I purchase a 1/2 packet for this & later horses,(so much easier to carve).
But they have since gone out of business.

More tomorrow.

Fantastic work.
Typical, you find a good supplier and then they close. Hope you find another one soon.

These horse are the result of a few years back my wife & I thinking that as we were at the wrong end of the life cycle maybe our son & daughter might like a carousel horse each, (what a laugh, I will most probability die with a workshop full of them), they jumped at the offer. Our son decided on a black 1880s Gold & Stein warhorse design, our daughter wanted a 1880s style rear stance feminine white with her livery colour choice.
I made the patterns then got a bit carried away and made 4, though there are only 2 basic patterns as I carve them you will notice I made changes to the manes, tails & livery so no 2 are ever the same.
Since then even though I have a very large workshop I have been limited to making small scale model Planes, boats, cars & anything else that takes my fancy as long as its small.

This is all for this thread, i will start a new thread of rocking horses over Easter & my latest project 1-30 scale Morris Minor Traveller as it progresses.Last edited by spart; 28th March 2018 at 06:05 PM. Reason: gramatic error
