Hi All,
Back onto the carriage with more gusto now.
You may call me stupid (many people do) but I have been wondering whether I was doing the carriage justice by having it with only a limited number of cubicles so it would fit behind the previously made loco. As one wise man once told me - if you are going to build something so it looks realistic - it should look realistic (or words to that effect- THANKS Trev), so I have done a bit more research and now this passenger carriage will be a stand alone on it's own (on it's own siding). Found some elevation and plan drawings and had them enlarged to the size that they will be on my model. The bogies look to be at the correct distance apart. Surprisingly - Cathie is OK with the increase in size. So long as I am happy.
(I think the old 1/3rd scale T Model Ford I built a few years ago that is in the display room will have to go - not too unhappy about that)
The modification on my thinking will make the carriage over 3 metres long. I have put the bogies in approximate location with the drawing taped to the back outside wall of the house. The old VB can gives an indication on size. I have started on the cross members on the top of each bogie.
Now much happier on how this is going to end up and think it may have added another 6 months to the length of the project.
All the Best
Keith

Charlie steps up to the plate.
He swings.
And it's out of there.
HOME RUN!
NOW THAT'S A CARRIAGE!
Bring it Charlie!
Cheers
Trev.

I call you Keith.
I think you have added over a metre to the carriage. As to the build time; it will be finished by the end of the year, just not sure which year.

When you do the rails keep it the same as the loco will make it look great if you ever display them together(that is if you can transport them both). By the way don't forget the guards carriage
Look forward to the big build which I am certain will be up to your usual high standard. Have you enough room in the workshop

Hi All,
Work continues on the bogies, although I have also lengthened my work table to accommodate the increased length of my carriage. The centre distance between bogies will be 1800mm.
I have been working on the top plates of the bogies and part of this is the carriage swivel point. I made up one on the wood lathe and then the second (well lets say the chisel didn't do what I was expecting) - result is in photo. Made me reconsider the size and technique for making these bearing plates. Photo sow the 2 being made in lathe and then one of the finished plates.
Assembled and painted. I cut a small section of MDF and cut holes to connect the 2 bogies. This of course is not the length but it gave me a good way of checking what my clearance will be between the bogie and the carriage.
Most of the assembly is by using bolts and nuts - this allows me to dismantle easily if I need to access parts instead of trying to work with glued parts.
Regards
Keith

There you go Trev as discussed -

Hi guys
Working on the brake system on the bogies - lots of mini components that go into 8 sets of brakes, plus need to go back up to the Newport Railway Museum to review the undercarriage of the carriage and take a few more photos (Saturday).
In the meantime I have gone off on a bit of a tangent and wanted to see if I could do one of the internal widows (that don't open). Made up the frame and put in a rebate to take the glass. I am using 2mm thick glass. Gee it is surprising how easy it is to cut the glass (but the guy at the glass supplier was great giving me a master class lesson which he didn't have to do) I will putty in the glass to make it look authentic. Hope this isn't boring for you but this minor work in making the window has put me "over the moon".
Best Regards
Keith

Hi guys,
Though I would share this with you - Got an email from the UK this morning - I am pretty chuffed.
email attached (From Lion Preservation Society)
"Hello Keith,
How are you? I wonder what your next project will be.
You sent a picture of your latest, the 4-6-2T to Alan Banks, which he passed on to me. So, I’ve included it in the latest Lionsheart, a copy of which is attached. It’s on page 6. By the way, what is the prototype?
I’ve already had an email from Geoff Theasby, of Model Engineer Magazine. He would like a copy of the photo. Is that OK with you? Please let me know – I’ll not send it until I get the go ahead from you.
With Best Wishes - John"
I have sent photos of the finished loco and also some photos of the bogies I am working on with the carriage.
Attached is the Newsletter from the UK
Best Regards
Keith
