Well today sees very little in the way of progress. I turned the cable winch drums and knobs for the winches. Also managed to get a coat of quick drying varnish on to it as well as join the top and bottom. All that remains is turn the wheels fit the cable winch assemblies along with the appropriate cables (bits of cord) after giving them a coat of finish.
The winch drums etc are only placed in position for the photo.

On to the wheels and not much turning used Dug around the wood store and found a nice nice of beech that was already the right thickness and ready to go except for a quick sand to clean it a little. Once i did this took a tea break as I was waiting for the wife to return from the local shop with a replacement hole saw as the one she brought first was the incorrect size OK my fault I told her the wrong number. So she made two trips for it today(she is good to me).
I drilled most of the way through with the larger holesaw on all of the wheel blanks plus a couple spare then changed to the smaller one and drilled 1/8" deep on 1/2 of them just to give an effect of a rim these are not scale wheels just a representation of wheel. The wood was reversed after drilling the rings (see below) and completed the cut with the larger holesaw this gave me 16 wheels.

    DSCF4984.jpg

While I was on the drill press I also found a darker piece of wood that again was the correct thickness for my needs and using the smaller hole saw made 8 rings as picture below(only 5 shown)

    DSCF4988.jpg

I took 4 of each of the wheels and placed them back to back on my pen mandrel and used a ring that I cut earlier between each set to allow for sanding the edges.

If you look at the second photo you can see that where the two wheels meet I have draw a line around and the using a parting tool parted in a little way this break will define the two whells when fitted to the crane, hopefully giving the appearance of twin wheels. Whilst on the lathe I sanded the rims and also gave the edges a slight round over
    DSCF4987.jpgDSCF4992.jpg

I removed all the wheels in there pairs after doing this with the second lot. I placed on of the wheels from each pair back on to the mandrel and glued the second to it using the mandrel as a guide to keep the holes lined up. I was able to remove each set as I had rubbed them which allowed the glue to grab.

    DSCF4995.jpgDSCF4996.jpgDSCF4997.jpgDSCF4998.jpgDSCF4991.jpgDSCF4989.jpg

Now I have 8 sets of wheels for the crane and 8 rings

DSCF4993.jpg Just realized that the photo's of the wheels are before glueing them together

I measured the wheel and the depth of the hole for the axles and cut 8 shafts from a piece of dowel followed by glueing the 8 rings one to each

    DSCF5006.jpgDSCF5005.jpg

The last thing I did was cut some more thicker rings which will become spacers for the winch system

    DSCF5007.jpg

That is all I managed today, there is going to be a small break on the build for a few days when I will be doing all the final fitting of the wheels After varnishing them and also fitting the winch along with the winch cord as well as make a bucket to hang on the end

    Derek,

Looks Tremendous. Great to see you with the wheels in your lathe so we can see you with your lathe work. It will look awesome with 16 wheels. Can't wait to see the next installment.

    Regards

    Keith

Great writeup Derek. I had wondered if I could use a pen mandrel to turn wheels and other round bits. So I assume the pen mandrel is 1/4" I'm going to have to add one to my tool list. Great job on the wheels. Using the holesaw made all your wheels exactly the same.

It is a standard pen mandrel which as you say is 1/4" but I use my own pen mandrel saver in the tailstock and don't push on the end of the shaft.

The only planes that were meant to be there are the Red Arrows display team but unfortunately they could not display as the cloud base was to low. Mind you there were some plastic models not worth taking photo,s of.

Sorry guys the only other pics I took are these and that was a running mock up the box on the side was for a propeller.

Oops Sorry guys I forgot to take photo's of what I was doing on the last stages of the build so instead you will have to put up with the finished article.

Basically I managed to put a finish on the wheels and part of the axles before glueing them on. I next tackled the pulley system and glued that in place as well as putting the cord in place, I left all that to dry and set about making a hook as timber would have had week areas because of short grain I made it out of a piece of brass bar making sure all edges are rounded over as I would with wood.

Then I turned to that dreaded machine you know the one Keith oh yes the lathe. A lump of wood put in the lathe and 1/2hr later 1 bucket, I chose to use the same cord as the other rigging as it is nice and soft wire may have left sharp piece to catch things on.

Well that is it for the time being until I decide what to make next.

    Great stuff mate.
    Looks terrific!.
I was going to have a crack about using the High Speed Timber Rotating Machine, "can't say the L word it's to rude".
But I don't wont you and Keith spinning out over it.
Looking forward to seeing what you have in store next!.

    Cheers
    Trev.
