    Default Crowie's Grader WIP

Recently Crowie sent me a number of toy plans he has collected over the years and I thought it only fitting that I should put the first one I am attempting here.
I was intending to get a fair bit done over the weekend, but my son needed assistance on both days and progress was slow. That's okay, it's family first.
Anyway, we are under way and I got most of the larger items cut out. We have a toymaker business/shop on the other side of town and he sells the discs he holesaws out of components for his toys. They are great starting blanks for 2 1/2" wheels so my wife picked up some yesturday.
Progress will be slow through the week as work seems to get in the way.

Darn, I have that set of plans. Wish I had time to build it along with you, but just too many other priorities at the moment. Please keep posting your progress so I can breeze right through it when I get time!

Finally got a bit more done this weekend, but no where near as much am I wanted. I have learnt a few things about timber selection when making small items like this. You need to select timber which is not too hard and brittle as it splinters very easily. The cab was made from a species I am not sure about, but it is very brittle. When I drilled the hole through it for the window, I didn't support it properly where it exited because of the angle, and it splintered.

    IMG_20140713_131024.jpg

I didn't want to make it again, so I routed out the shape of a door on each side to the depth of where the splintering stopped. I don't think this looks out of place.
Below is where I am up to with a mock up of the parts I have done so far. Nothing is glued at this stage. I am tossing up what to make the small arms and levers out of, and think that I might do them out of Huon Pine as it is strong and tough and I have a bit that is pretty plain and no good for my pens.

Hopefully I can progress a bit quicker with the rest of the build.

Got a bit more done over the weekend. All the parts have been cut and glued in place. I had to remake the arms that come from the front to the grader blade. For some reason they were too long and the blade wouldn't sit right. I just need to dismantle and apply some laquer to all the parts, and also make up the wheels from the blanks I got and some axles. I am trying to devise a way of putting a tread in the tyre part.

    Looking fantastic!
It will be interesting to see what you come up with regards the tread.

    Cheers

Yep, got it thanks Peter. I have had a quick look and will have a better read as soon as I can. Looks like I may have to ditch the blanks I have and start from scratch to achieve those designs.
    Thanks for the tips.

Well I have ditched the pine blanks for the wheels as I feel they just don't cut the mustard. Instead, I have decided to make them out of Red Gum and Huon Pine and add some appropriate tread.
I had a nice big chunk of Red Gum, so I cut off some 15mm slices on the table saw and then cut out the tyres on the bandsaw. Two will be glued together to create each tyre.
    Grader-wheels.jpg Grader-wheels_1.jpg
I drilled out the bore using a forstner bit and then turned a mandrel on the lathe to mount them on. I then turned the tyres to diameter and shaped them a bit (can't see the shaping in the photos).
    Grader-wheels_4.jpg Grader-wheels_5.jpg Grader-wheels_6.jpg Grader-wheels_7.jpg
After sizing and shaping the tyres I used the mandrel from the lathe and mounted it on a jig on the tablesaw to cut the tread. I should have marked out the indexing marks while the mandrel was still on the lathe. That way I could have used the indexing unit built into the lathe headstock to accurately mark the positions as I struggled a bit with the first couple to get the spacing spot on. If I do more of this sort of thing I will need to make up a proper indexing unit to mount on the tablesaw.
    Grader-wheels_8.jpg Grader-wheels_9.jpg Grader-wheels_10.jpg
Now all the treads are cut. I will make up the rims from the Huon Pine next, and some pegs to hold them on. I also want to ebonize the Red Gum to make it black. Something I haven't done before, but sounds fairly straight forward.
All the body and links have had a couple of coats of Urethane over the weekend.
Looking forward to my next chance to do some more.

This is looking great and you did a sweet job on the tyres. I really like the fix you did for the fix of the splintering when drilling the hole for the window in the door. In fact when I make my model of this, I think instead of drilling the window as the plans say, I will try to cut the window to the shape you routed. Looks great.

Sounds like a smart move to me and I think it will look better anyway.
