    Default Cube robot

    I had a bit of spare time on the weekend so I made a cube-robot as a little gift.

    It can be put into various poses and folds up into a cube.

    Here he is begging for a mouth and eyes (still to do).

    It's very simple, but it gave me an opportunity to give my new shooting plane and board a good workout trimming everything perfectly square and dimensionally accurate. I was impressed with it; both for end grain and along the grain where a tight mouth and fine cut resulted in no tearout.

    The only difficult part was working out where and how deep to make each groove to ensure the whole thing came together into a nice cube. Luckily no mistakes were made and I didn't need to scrap anything!

    Thanks Crowie, but I can't take any credit for the idea, i saw one for sale in a department store in London. It was larger and $500! My fiancee liked it so i snapped a pic and decided to make one. About $5 in tassie oak and $1.20 in elastic later... albeit a lot of elbow grease so I certainly don't begrudge the $500 price tag from the point of view of the maker.

    I kept thinking why the grooves in each blocks then I saw the picture with him kneeling and it all fell into place, love the ideas and execution, both your and his.

    These robots are pretty awesome.

    They are called CubeBots and my wife used to sell them in her toy store. That was quite a while ago now, but they were fantastically expensive and very well made. We imported them from US. Making them must be a complete PITA.

    I make wooden robots too... they are great fun, good for scraps. I've recently been making them using the Yosegi Zaiku method of joinery.

    Perhaps we can have a friendly robot making competition?

    No idea. Unless you can extract them from my brain or decipher my scribbles on a page which evolved as I went and where the dimensions on the page do not reflect what I actually cut...
