Question Doll House with as much details that I can do as possible,

    Hey Guys,

    Im Dave,
I am new to this fourm, I have very minimal skills with fine wood working, I am good with carpentry just not the task that I am about to under take.

I am planing on building a doll house for my two daughters 1.5yo and 2.5yo (yes I know they are too young to be playing with a doll house at the moment but I dont plan on a slap 1 night job)

I would like to come out of my own comfit zone of using 18v tools to build massive structures and try a more reformed task of building this doll house.

My plan is as such of that I dont have a plan, but I know what I want. I want to build a extremely detailed swing open doll house nothing massive maybe 600Wx400Dx600H.

I guess what I am here for is any advise at all. from what size timber to where i can find tiny balustrades (or can these not be bought but made?)

also is there any real MUST have tools for this?

    Dave.

G'Day & Welcome to a top forum "Dave".
There are a heap of members in & around Melbourne as well as across the rest of Victoria..
You'll find a heap of helpful & knowledgeable blokes & ladies on the forum and for most very willing to assist.
Especially the toymakers & model makers, top mob!!
Make sure you show off your handiwork as everyone loves a photo, especially WIP [work in progress] photos with build notes.
Now the doll's house WOW - may I suggest you build one on a slightly larger scale for the little one...
When my girls were little and into barbie dolls I build a dolls house for them from a cut down old book shelf as that fitted the dolls size...
With that in mind, see the size of the dolls the like and build something to suit...
Have a look a Cooroy Toymaker on the forum as he & the club he belongs to do some beaut larger dolls house furniture...
Also there have been some very beautiful and intricate dolls houses show cased on the forum which you'll find doing a search in the toymaking section...
Good luck Dave, please show off your workmanship and do spoil your girls...
    Enjoy the forum.
    Enjoy your woodwork...
    Cheers, crowie

PS - Tools....all you can afford, but do it slowly purchasing each as you come across the need in each project..
Often on the forum in Market Place you'll pickup up some good tools plus don't forget sources like Gumtree, Garage Sales, Clearance Sales & Deceased estates; good quality secondhand tools can be way better quality than the "el-cheapo" stuff one can buy these days....

This is a 1/12th scale dolls house and I know that it would not be suitable for the age of the little girls but it will give you an idea of a simple layout of the rooms, it is a little over the size that you are looking for except the depth. The rooms are large enough to get play furniture in and not too deep that they have to reach to far back.

This is a shop in an incomplete state the rooms need dividers which will add extra strength to each floor, for little girls this I feel would be a must

Hopefully they will give you an idea of how you could make one suitable for them. They are both made from MDF and can be using a saw and router for the main carcase but not the fine detail work which will need other tools or even buy parts.
The same applies to the spindles for stairs they can also be brought.

Hope this helps a little if there is anything else just put a post in this section of the forum. As Crowie above says There is someone who may be able to help

    Hi Dave,

I am a bit of a locomotive fanatic. I used to have a G Scale railway layout and I built my buildings a similar size to what dolls houses are built. There are a number of outlets that provide doors, windows, furniture etc that would suit your requirements. The stuff I had (and still have a bit of is labelled under "The Vicki Collection"

Here is a website that I googled that may help you as a resource - Vicki Collection Furniture

Also attached is one of the doors I still have. If you send me a PM with your address - I can send it to you - no charge mate. I won't be building any more buildings - just locomotives (I will see if I can find any more furniture bits to give you)

    Regards

    Keith
