    Red face Doll's House

    Hi all!

I was instructed by my daughter to make a doll's house for my grandaughter for Chritmas!

This is the result... I made it from 12mm plywoodand it's roughly 600 wide x 300 deep x 1.2m high. I bought the windows and door as well as a whole heap of furniture to put it...

My grandaughter at age 3 is fortunately not an afficiado of fine woodworking so she loves it!

    Very nice job, Rob.

    Also very age appropriate.

    Excellent!

My daughter "helped" make her dolls house at about 3 y.o., and still loves playing with it at nearly 10.

We thought about an opening front, but she hasn't wanted it yet. We did decorate inside - a cork tile for the kitchen (in case the dolls drop a plate or glass), a scrap of lino, a left-over tile, and a facewasher cut into a rug.

A couple of rooms also received a snippet of wallpaper, just the narrow trim strip stuff - I forget where the sample came from, but it looks good in the lounge room.

Latest project was some curtains, because she wanted to start to learn how to sew.

So, don't regard it as finished, but just the start of a many-year project.

    Cheers,
    Andrew

    Default Dolls house

Nice looking dolls house Rob you have done a great job We don't see a lot of toys for little girls here. I have two grandsons and it is all about.... trucks cars and cranes.

Did you work off a plan or was it something you thought out and built.Good to see some things for little girls on the toy forum great effort.

You raise a good point. It would be nice to see more toys made for little girls for sure.

I think dolls houses are great.
Although I have never built one.

I would like to see more of this work.
Surely there must be lots of blokes who have built dolls houses, but not posted pictures.

It can get very expensive building these little houses, I have seen the prices of the fittings and furniture, at a hobby/toy shop.

And maybe plans for the furniture as well. Which would bring the cost down quite a bit and mdf is pretty cheap and so is partical board
Two grandsons it’s all trucks and tractors.

I think the greatest aspect of things like handmade doll's houses is that they have great potential to become heirlooms, treasured by more than one generation. There is something truly special about owning something made by one's grandfather. It adds to the joy of ownership.

One thing that has delighted David is that his model cars have been bought by people who intend to hand them down to their boys as heirlooms. A wonderful thought - that your creations will live on.

I do think girls miss out in the toy-making area, mainly because the boys toys are more straightforward. All boys love trucks and cars etc.

I've been thinking about David perhaps making Barbie doll furniture on the scrollsaw - simple things like a bed, a garden swing, a love seat. I even bought a moth-eaten Barbie at a market to use to scale. But it's just an idea in its infancy, and David isn't really convinced of the market. But I think it would be a great thing for doll lovers.
