    Derek,

Thanks for your tip. You are a wood turning guru - really appreciate your advice

Happy with the wood turning - but even happier with 120 and 180 grit paper to hide the flaws

    Regards

    Keith

You are welcome Keith. Nothing wrong with 120grit paper, depending on how a good a days turning I have depends on 120grit or 240grit to start sanding

    Hi All,

Just about finished the rear buffer plate assembly. Modified the steel protector bars and positioned beside the buffers.

The next step will be to make the rear lantern and connector that fits in the centre of the back of the tender. The photos I have seen only indicates that there was one rear lamp - Handyjack - what are your thoughts ? The D4 I made had 2 front and 2 rear lanterns.

In the photo you will see some gaps and joins between the tender and the chasis. That is because everything is still just "sitting"there - awaiting dismantling and painting. In the finished product there will be no gaps. (Hopefully)

    Regards

    Keith

The tender looks great. I find that it is all the little detail that seems to take me the longest to complete. And I am sure it will all be to the very high standard that you have set for yourself

    Guys

    Only one image.

Don't know what the other 2 are. I initially tried to insert image a few times earlier today before the picture problem was fixed. Maybe that. I had restored the initial text from previous tries ???

    Regards

    Keith

    Default Engine Lamps

It is not the number of lamps on the engine (front or rear) but the number of lamp brackets that I would aim to have first.
http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/upl...1428518168.jpg shows part of the rear and at least two lamp brackets can be seen, a third is certainly hidden.
Steam Workshop | 5″ GNR Stirling Single while this is a model, three lamp brackets can be clearly seen.

The front of the engine has three four brackets on the buffer beam and one at the chimney base, the tender however (according to the model) has two brackets on the buffer beam and one up higher.

On a day to day basis, (and journey to journey) the number and positioning of the lamps would be altered. While I do not know the codes, they could indicate things like express passenger, local (stopping passenger), goods, light engine (ie engine with no carriages attached), special train or royal train.

The code would be displayed on the leading end, if the engine is light then red lamps would be at the other end.

On a shift, between shed and yard or station light engine code would be shown, then for example express passenger. At the terminal station or when the engine is detached light engine code displayed again.

So if you have one, or two red lamps (I do not know what the requirements were), you will have sufficient as they can always be swapped with the ones at the other end.

That'll be it mate. That tender is so beautiful. Maybe it needs a nice rake of coaches behind her

    Thanks Kevin,

I will make up 3 brackets for the rear and look at making a bracket for the front of the chimney. Thanks for the photo link - the first one I have never seen

By the way. As I always tend to change my mind on what will be my next build (Seriph1) suggested some rolling stock.

A very good mate of mine has offered to take photos of Stephenson's Rocket for me in the UK. Have always wanted to build this loco but couldn't find enough info on the drive gearing or steam lines and control systems. So finally "Rocket" is back on the agenda. Three years in the waiting.

Another mates "hatred" of the diesel (Brick on Wheels) looks like not coming to fruition in the foreseeable future.

I reckon my paint job on the Stirling is a 2 - 3 month job and then have to make the track for it to sit on.

    Regards

    Keith

For what it's worth, I agree that compared to steam locos, diesels are bland. There is something incredibly beautiful in what I call "visible machines" ... the Rocket will have its challenges but it will pay dividends.
