Yes the paint pen is an invaluable tool. It really adds a bit extra to the other painting that is required. One tends to compliment the other and hopefully the outcome will be a good outcome of both techniques.

Have never really liked painting - BUT - working on the Stirling is something different. I loved the primed grey, however as my good wife Cathie says every day. "It's tending to bring the thing to life" (She doesn't call it a locomotive)

Thanks for your interest in my painting exploits - I really appreciate it guys.

    Best Regards

    Keith

    Hi All,

I have fully dismantled the chasis and given it 3 coats of "Domino" paint. This is the closest colour I could get to the original loco chasis. (available at Bunnings). I have spray painted the rail along the length of the boiler in "Pewter". Drilled out the retainers a little so they wouldn't scrape the paint. I fitted the front bogie guards just to see how it would look. Now onto painting the wheel and have made up a jig so I can pinstripe the hubs of each of the wheels.

Over the weekend - I was contacted by a mate who had a friend who is selling his property. He had a fully setup HO scale layout 10 foot X 4 foot that he had to get rid of by Saturday. I now own a HO Layout - motorised points - lights - 3 separate tracks with controllers for the exceptional price of - nothing. He even followed me from his house to mine with it in his tandem trailer. Needs a fair bit of work - but the tracks work and locos run. Talk about lucky. Cathie is OK with it - as long as it goes in my shed. Need to re-arrange some of my gear in the "non working" side of my shed. Photo below.

    Regards

    Keith

    Peter,

Lots of old rolling stock supplied. Carriages and about 6 steam locos. I can only get 3 to work - may have to pull the others apart. I have quite a few locos and rolling stock from my HO layout I had 17 years ago. But they work OK. I will post some photos tomorrow.

    Regards

    Keith

Tri-ang hornby track I think. And that looks like a Jinty on the rail to the right

A master not just in the build but the paintwork as well. The parts you have done look fantastic and is slowly coming towards completion. I find that when I have painted something it can take a long tome but is worth all of the effort, this effort can be seen in what you have managed to do so far.

The layout looks good and as you say needs some work but you do had all the basics on it by the sound of things.

Thanks Derek - appreciate your comments.

The good thing about the Stirling is that they went a bit over the top with the pinstriping and colour scheme (maybe just the restoration of the locomotive) but the paintwork is beautiful on the original. I wonder if this locomotive ever pulled any Royal carriages.

I was a bit anxious about the paintwork to be done on this loco but I am getting a little more confident with it each day. The paint pens have given a lot of confidence. Not sure about the numbering though - may leave it without a number or the GNR on the tender ?

    Regards

    Keith

There's definitely no shame in making nice decals for the lettering

    Hi All,

I have been painting the wheels. I made up a jig so I could pinstripe around the hubs of the wheels. It is turned out of aluminium and centre drilled so the compass point locates centrally. This is just a tight sliding fit on the wheel bore. Made up another for the smaller crank arm shaft bore.
Then used the paint pen on the 2 ends and joined using a ruler. Came up OK. I have used "Bluescope Ironstone" as my colour of the wheel rim.

Thanks to Seriph1 suggestion about making up decals for my numbering and GNR on the side of the tender. I have researched it found some stuff on YouTube about making your own decals. I have played around a bit on shadowing letters. I got some waterslide paper that will suit my inkjet printer. I think it may come up allright.

Here are some photos of the locomotives that I got as freebies with my also free HO layout (very lucky)

I still can't get over how well the paint pens work.

And like this idea about the decals will need to look into this, Thanks!!!

There are clear and white decal material available.

Officeworks has some up to A3. They can also print your designs cheaply on very high end colour laser printers.

While I understand (and share) your obsession to Do It Yourself, I'll be happy to create the correct images if you want, including getting them printed.

    Steve,

Yes - I am really lucky. Haven't got the British diesel running yet, but I am sure that it will come up OK when I do a bit of cleaning up of the wheels to create a better electrical contact of them to the track.
The HO layout will be a bit of a fill in job between the Stirling and Stephenson's Rocket.
