    Default GNR Stirling Locomotive

    The cabin is bloody breathtaking!!!!!

That tender dimension sounds a bit off mate. I don't think the tender on my model is as long as the loco but it may not be to scale.

Just checked a bunch of photos. Looks like the tender is the about the same length as the boiler. Do you have other source material that indicates it's longer?

    Thanks mate.

I have a line drawing, that indicates the size. Fortunately haven't started on the tender yet. Therefore I will do a fair bit more research

    Thanks

I know the drawing. The tender's a big'n but only goes up to the cylinders on the boiler by my reckoning. It'd be great if there were some dimensions somewhere! I imagine the scale builders would have done a set

I'll measure my tender tonight if you need. At 4mm to the foot it should scale up easily enough.

Wikipedia indicates the whole lot is just over 50ft.

My OO scale tender here seems to be around 20ft.

    Hi All,

Been a while since I posted.

I needed to extend the footplate and also figure out a method of securing the side plates and wheelguard assembly to the chasis of the locomotive. I have made up stays out of aluminium that are screwed to the chasis, footplate and side guards. Come up pretty well but I think it's going to be a real pain with my inventory of parts when I totally dismantle and paint everything. May need to number and log everything as nothing is exactly the same (bearing covers etc).

I have cutoff my cabin securing bolts and then bodyfilled the recessed head holes. You can just see the holes outline under the primer.

I made up the access steps to the cabin. These are MDF with aluminium angle as the steps. The top of the steps are secured with thicker section aluminium angle.

The tender will be a hook assembly connection to the loco. You can see the latch part at the rear of the loco chasis.

The extra strip of PVC on the inside of the cabin at the access steps is where I am going to secure the access handrails on the outside.

Still some more work on components in the cabin, then an inventory list, dismantle and begin painting - maybe ?

    Regards

    Keith

Looks great in workshop grey. Will only be better once painted.

    Hi all,

I was not that happy with the shroud for the boiler safety valves that I made quite a while ago. It was too low compared to the original prototype. I bit the bullet so to speak and made up a new one.

I cut 7 pieces of 19mm pine - 90mm in diameter on the bandsaw. I centre drilled each blank with a 2mm hole and then stuck a piece of straight 2mm wire in the first blank. Then glued each piece with PVA glue and then placed onto the wire. Did this for all the blanks and then clamped with 4 clamps overnight.

I machined up on the wood lathe. Sketched up a diagram to use as a bit of a template as I went along. The main chisel I used was the skew. Sanded up with 80, 120 and then very fine at 400 grit.

The top is drilled with a Forstner bit.

The boiler curvature I did on the spindle sander.

I have used about 6 coats of primer - sanding back with 400 grit each time.

The updated version is the second photo

    Regards

    Keith

Keith, You've just pulled another "Trevor" being that particular with the look, scale and end result...
The master would be very proud of the student...Cheers, Peter

It's a massive PITA to correct something far into the process, but isn't it wonderfully satisfying once that bullet has been bit? Well done for your dedication mate. The effects will be far reaching.

I think I am trying to put off the inevitable of having to fully dismantle to commence the paintwork

Still a few levers to go in the cabin and the access handrails. I could start on the tender I suppose
