    Hi All,

Might have a bit of a chance to get out in the shed today (Started on sanding the wheels) but family coming over so there may be (definitely) a bit of drinking done.

May I take this opportunity to wish everyone a safe and Happy Christmas and thanks for your support over the year

    Take care on the roads

    All the Best

    Keith and Cathie

    Hi All,

Hope everyone had a happy and enjoyable Christmas.

I have been working on the wheels.

I filed the spokes with a smooth file and needle files. Then followed up with 80 grit, 120 grit and 180grit sandpaper. The special sanding sticks I made up came in handy at the area of the spoke hubs. Then block sanded the front surfaces. I have only pilot drilled for the axles and crank pins. I want to design the shaft assembly and bearing assemblies before I commit to finalising the exact end axle size although it will be very close to the original Stirling (scale) size.

I have primed the wheels with Automotive Surfacer Primer - thanks Trev for the suggestion on Monday night

Will do a bit more sanding of any rough bits and then give another coat of primer.

I have shown both sides of the front of the loco. The sketch is good for getting an appreciation of dimensions and how the loco will eventually look. Just photos of the wheels doesn't mean much.

Now onto the design of the chasis and axle bearings and then marking out and cutting the chasis sides. Instead of using MDF for the frame like I did on the 4-6-2 Tank Loco - I am going to thickness down some 19mm pine to 18mm and then use 19mm pine as my bearing blocks. This will give a nice sliding fit and will be much neater than the tank loco bearing assembly.

Enjoying this build - but a bit sick of sanding at the moment. About 30 hours of filing and sanding has gone into the wheels

    Regards

    Keith

    Looking Great Mate!
Since you like sanding so much I'll post the tank up to your place and you can finish it off for me.

    Cheers

No Trevor - I can't do that. I know you love the taste and smell of resin and fibreglass dust

It looks like you made them all left hand wheels now you need to make some right handers.

    Hi All,

I have been working on the design of my chasis for the Stirling. It is a bit for difficult than my previous locos as I can only go by a few elevation photos and a YouTube clip that I found and have attached - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4bTSwkyUoYg

I have made up an Engineering Drawing of the side frames (Sorry my mate in the Apple Isle) and have then made up a stencil to transpose it onto my pine that I am using. The pine was 19mm thick but to bring it to a truer scale of the loco I have thicknessed down to 10mm. I then cut out using my jigsaw. Then cleaned up.
The rectangular slots in the frame will be where my axle bearing blocks slide up and down. The bearings will be retained by a leaf spring assembly that I will make for each wheel.

The top frame in the second photo shows approximate positions of the wheels. The lower photo of the frame gives a clearer view of the bearing slots.

Hope everyone has a safe and tremendous New Year

    Regards

    Keith

What are you doing to me mate, that looks a bit more than a scribble on a piece of timber.
Still I'll let you get away with it, when the results are that good!.
Just don't make a habit of it!.

    Cheers
    Trev.
