Jacobs Ladder
This is a quick little toy I made with my 6 year old.
Instructions I used are here - Make a Jacob's Ladder | Easy Crafts for Kids -- Quick Arts and Craft Ideas -- Kids' Crafts | FamilyFun
I did these bits - I used left over Merbau decking. Ripped 5mm thick planks. As the boards were different widths I ripped them to 75mm and cut 80 mm lengths. I rounded the end of each board on a sander.
Together we then stuck it all together. Thought the merbau colour and the navy ribbon was a nice combination and was rather upset when he said he wanted to paint it because it looked boring. That will be the next task for the weekend
I used some cheap gift ribbon but it was quiet flimsy so time I will use something a bit stronger
He now wants to make another for one of his friends whose name is Jacob.
Might try this next A Traditional Jacob's Ladder

Read the title and hovered the mouse over it and saw the bit about a 6 yr old. Thought are you trying to kill them. (a few thousand volts in a Jacobs ladder). Then looked and hit google and wow never knew they were also called jacobs ladders. Nice work.

That's the exact opposite reaction to what I had.
He saw one in a shop and we thought it would be fun to make, when I googled it I came up with a few thousand volts..... Never knew about that one

Made another one for his friend. This time i used a different set of instructions - http://www.instructables.com/id/A-Tr...acob-s-Ladder/
It was much easier and no mess (except the painting) also allowed the 6YO to do most of the work as follows
DAD This time used some left over 140x12 pine. ripped it into 2 pieces 65mm wide, then cut 70 lengths (sizes don;t matter, but each piece needs to be the same size.)
6YO sanded each piece (DAD finished removing sharp edges)
6YO painted
DAD lined up pieces and started thumb tacks
6YO hammered and laid out the next pieces
***needs a small amount of slack in ribbon otherwise if it is too tight the pieces don't "fall" down. It pays to check each one after the pins are hammered in, so they can be removed and refitted if needed
all up cost $5.50 3 different coloured ribbons $1 each pack of coloured thumb tacks $2.50. used some poster paint we had at home
Lots left over to make more if he wants to make more
6YO very happy with end result
