Unfortunately the lathe is only a portion of the cost of getting into the obsession of woodturning.

I can echo that the lathe is only the tip of the iceberg, it is like the metal turning lathe there are so many other things that you will find that you need. I know this how well I run two lathes in my little workshop

    Derek,

Thanks for your comments. I would be lost without my metal turning lathe. Takes me back to my youth as a fitting and turning apprentice. The good thing is you can turn wood in it as well. Thank goodness for coarse and fine sandpaper.

The Lion was back out of the shed today. I'm happy how it's progressing. The funnel is being primed, that's why it's not on the stack. Working on fiddly components for the pressure relief valves. Making them out of aluminium. Planning on how to make the side "fences" at rear of loco. Think this will be a big challenge.

Thanks for your kind comments Paul. This is the most enjoyable thing I have built so far. Got things on track (excuse pun) for Stephenson's Rocket for my next build. Reckon I still have 2 - 3 months on this, with the loco, tender and tracks still to go. Again thanks.

    Regards

Mucked up on my pressure gauge. It was way to big for what the Lion has. I was working to live steam information and didn't even think of the proper size gauge. It has now been removed. Made up a new gauge. Cathie had an old ladies watch which didn't work. (doesn't now anyway). I dismantled it. It is the perfect size for the Lion loco. I made up a new pressure gauge face instead of watch face. I used the hour hand as the needle. Made up new bracket. Been working on the Pressure Relief Valves. Still a fair bit to go, but thought I would show how they will tentatively look.
Think it looks OK so far.

    Regards

    Keith

    Thank you Trev,

I have some 1/8" copper tube that will fit beautifully in the back of the pressure gauge. This then connects via a tube connector into the top of the top access / pressure plate.
The bottom of the Relief valves will connect via 4mm OD aluminium pipe into the top bell housing from each relief valve.

    Regards

    Keith

The Pressure Relief valves have been painted gold and are now drying. Re-assembled loco with the new pressure gauge. It now looks more prototypical I think. The funnel has been primed and painted in a number of coats of gold and has dried well. Still need to handle the gold painted objects with cotton gloves for at least a week after painting. This paint looks as though it tarnishes after a period of time - possibly a good thing to look more realistic.
Now working on footplate before I can start on handrails.

    Regards

    Keith

    Thumbs up

    Wow, this is looking superb!

Just one little comment, the pipe from boiler to pressure gauge at some point should a single coil or U in it. The purpose of this bend is to hold a quantity of condensate to protect the mechanism of the pressure gauge from the hot steam.

    Handyjack.

Thanks for that - will try and accommodate.

    Hi Guys,

Handyjack, I looked up the configuration of setting up pressure gauges, but not much on line. I used a single loop on a new piece of copper tube. Hope it is around the correct way, it is there forever now. Thanks for your info.
I fitted the Pressure Relief valves. Very fiddly work. Used aluminium tube as the feed line from the boiler. Used Trev's suggestion on bending pipe to avoid cracking by inserting wire in the bore of the tube. Again had to use cotton gloves when handling the gold painted sections otherwise bare skin will make it tarnish.
Made up the footplate. Again used spiral nail heads as rivets.

Now starting to make up a template for the handrails so tops and bottoms on both sides are identical.

Coming up pretty well. Moving faster than I thought I would. May not be 2 months work left in this build. Have to wait and see. I have all the information I need from the UK for my next build - Stephenson's Rocket, although I think this a prettier locomotive.

    Regards

    Keith

Started to work on the handrail/fence for the engineer on the loco. I wanted something thin, durable and easy to work for the top and bottom section of the handrail. I used rectangular section downpipe and cut out the sides. Gave me flat PVC sheeting to use. I made up a template for the top and bottom rail section so all would be the same - left and right hand. Machined up the posts out of 10mm dia aluminium. The round and half round "fancy" bits are PVC pipe cut to 10mm widths. These fences will be filled in with aluminium sheet and the tops of each post will have finials.

    Regards

    Keith

Starting to really take shape now Keith I like how you made the railing.
