    G'day All,

Just been restin' up last few days and decided that its time to look into these feather boards used by many in their workshops. I'd been thinkin' about these things for ages and how they may help by bein' an extra pair of hands. Thinkin' of ways to go about making me own I stumbled across this youtube video and decided that with all me problems I gotta be able to do this.
Hope this link works. https://youtu.be/3eA-NxqjiN8 if not hopefully those of you who know how to get there can sit back and have a laugh.

    Thanks Peter,
will sit down tonight and have a good look. Haven't ever considered feather boards before until the other day when I went to the table saw and attempted to rip a piece of wood to size. When I stumbled across that chap on youtube makin' a feather board I just had to laugh at all his silly mistakes and how rough as guts he was makin' one. Thought I'd do better and be a lot safer. Have had an urgent request to attend the local hospital today Saturday arvo, they wanna shove a camera crew down me throat on a fact findin' mission, hopefully they'll let me come home and I wont have to stay. Catch up later when I eventually get onto the next part of me truck build.

    Hooroo Kev.

    G'day All,
Sorry has been a while but I'm still above ground so that's pretty darn good in my book. I have some problems I currently battlin' with, this darn disease appears to be progressin' in some areas so I dealin' with it best I can. Got a slight crampin' and twisting issue in the right hand side of the body and I tryin' to get me right hand from crampin' up too much. You gotta laugh when me fingers cramp and me hand twists behind me back, looks like I tryin' to scratch me back side all the time. Winter hasn't been too bad here a few cold days so I when its over some of me tight muscles might free up. I'll put on hold the body part of me truck I wanted to do and as me left hand is ok I'm gunna work on me axle hangers and body rails, these I can do on my up side down jig saw table as I can use that left handed. I got me a small second hand router with a variable speed control, gunna make a small router table outa it. Already got my perspex mountin' plate for it and spent yesterday afternoon drillin' three holes in it so it can be attached to the router, I just love these little screws with star heads on them when all me screw driver wants to do is become a baton and conduct a darn orchestra. I enjoyin' all ya threads and postings and I hope to be back soon with a little more on me truck build. Take care all I'm off to see how many axle hangers and rails I can turn out on me up side down jig saw.

    Hooroo

Well it's about time Kev, One was thinking you'd gone a droving or worst, walk about.....
Good to hear you are still above ground and getting a little shed time, got to love shed time.
On the screws issue, have a look at the "in square" head screws next time you get into the hardware store as they drive in or out with a cordless tool very easily..
    Cheers mate, Peter

    G'day All,
Well guys I been havin' some fun in me workshop, and I'm still able to count to ten on both hands plus I think the wife likes me bein' out there instead of under her feet in the house. Me ipod has been thumpin' out me country and rock n roll music and me tremors have been happily goin' along with the beat. I started out doin' a few axle hangers and body rails for me current project and once I got goin' I just kept on turning more and more out. Makin' hay while the sun shines, I came to the conclusion that if I make more than I currently need when I have to take a break when things get outa control then I might be able to sit around and sand all down and put them together until I can get back to me power tools. Trouble is at last count I'd made enough hangers and rails for 60 trucks and I feel in the mood to now cut out some for me trailers. I have some images to up load next time I'm on I haven't had time on the computer to play around with me images cause while I'm goin' good I just wanna be in the workshop. Runnin' a little late this mornin' cause I thought I better drop by here and let ya know I'm havin' a ball. I'll catch up soon when things start to go a little pear shaped, so until then, more sawdust to create.

    Hooroo.

    Kev.

Ok, Nothin' much on TV tonight so I play on this computer. Like I say I been havin' some fun, slow but have been enjoying it and no nothin's gone pear shaped yet (touch wood).
    R&H 01.JPGR&H02.JPGR&H03.JPGR&H04.JPGR&H05.JPGR&H06.JPG
What I needed make me rails and axle hangers from only needed to be 19mm thick and 10mm wide, with the longest cut at 208mm, so cut me timber to length on sled. Me little jigsaw got a real work out for a couple of days and I happy I spent time building it as its quite easy to use with me good left hand. I still use me old wood lathe as a sander don't turn on it anymore because need two good hands and I didn't like the chisels flyin' around the place when I'd accidentally push them into me work piece. I like to pin with dowel rather than use nails when I glue things up, me dowels I like to roll with a wood rasp which allows the glue to hold to the dowel a little better. After I get all the others rails and hangers pinned I'll knock them off with the scroll saw.

The reason I decided to make more than what I currently need is because the rails and the axle hangers are all used To Build the Truck, B-Double Trailers and Dolly's so the more I have the better things will be later on down the track and besides I'm havin' a ball so why stop. I've set aside the final shapin' of me mudguards at present cause me right hand fingers are givin' me a problem at present, but once I train them up to do what I want (touch wood) I'll get those outa the way. Durin' me shed down time I'm buildin' a web site (with the help of the wife) for my parkinson's friends who are interested in what I'm tryin' to achieve. We are a crazy bunch of people from around the world with many varied interests so I decided to share with them my dream of still bein' a wooden toy maker. While I'm tryin' not to bore you good people with my problems when the site is up and runnin' I'll let you all know of it should you like to go visit it.

In the mean time my website is like my creation here, takes time and with a key board that doesn't always say what I wanna say I spend heaps of time fixin' darn mistakes. So if I kept gettin' some good shed time I'll get back with some more images and have heaps of rails and axle hangers completed. Thanks for your comments and I'll try me best to get here more often as I progress. And if any of you are from down Adelaide way and had heard of a man suffering from pd who was bike riding up into Qld to raise money for pd sufferers in Adelaide, well he made it into Rockhampton yesterday, I couldn't get down to see him so I'm not sure if he is heading further North, I think he's been on the road for a couple of months and that's a bloody good effort.

Ok done editin' catch up later.

    Hooroo
    Kev.

Certainly a small scale production line. Your post just goes to show others that woodworking can be done with a little care if people have problems and not to give up.

    G'day All,
Well I been flat chat like a lizard drinkin', wife had to go into nearby town yesterday and I went along to get some timber. I never buy much as it takes so long to get through it, but I been on a roll and took the chance to buy some more. Now I don't have a router table yet even though I in the process of buildin' one, so hope ya aint horrified with me set up to cut out me truck bonnets. Is the best way I figured out how to do it and so far so good.
    Bon 01.JPGBon 02.JPGBon 03.JPGBon 04.JPGBon 05.JPG
I spent most of yesterday tryin' to figure out a way to cut a channel into me bonnets for me rail to go into. Now me bonnets are 37mm wide x 30mm high x 37mm long. The channel needs to be 19mm wide 11mm deep. Not bein' good at math the first thing I did was cut into a piece of timber me 19mm x 11mm channel. On one side of the channel I left 9mm and glued a stop block to it. Now for the tricky bit, when I cut the channel out of the jig block I used me clamps but now this time me bonnet blocks are a lot smaller and one good hand is not enough to hold them in place. As you can see I have clamps everywhere, not a pretty look I have to admit but the only way I could achieve what I wanted.

I'll get me router table made one day and I wont have to use clamps all over the place and it'll be much safer. this method I use has taken me all day to channel out 16 bonnet blocks. I've got 1.6 meters of timber left and from that I hope to get another 42 bonnet blocks. If I keep havin' a good run I should have the 42 done in about three days time touch wood. You'll see that the first cuts I made in the bonnet blocks are at 11mm deep, the center cuts are a little under 11mm this allows me to sand the channels so that I can get a flush rail on the bottom of the bonnet block. I have found that some times the 11mm timber I buy can be .5 even 1mm under the size so to keep all as nice as possible a little sanding doesn't hurt. Yes every cut I make I have to shift the bonnet block clamp it into place and make the cut and so on and on and on I go.

So that's what I been up to, a bit outa the ordinary and horrifying I know, but I'm gettin' there slowly.

    Hooroo for now.
    Kev.

Well done on working out a safe way to cut a channel. While it may be time consuming, at the end of the day you still have all your fingers and no parts have been thrown around the shop.
