    Default Mining Dump Truck

    Hi,

Have been requested to make a mining dump truck. Have made one based on photos I have found. The wheels are 2" by 3/8". I think they are too small. What do you think and do you have any suggestions where I can get larger wheels.

    Thanks for looking.

The wheels you got are about the right size for the rims alone, without the tyres...
Too many projects, so little time, even less money!

    G'Day Todd,
Great work, good design, WELL DONE!!
BUT must agree with Yonnee; the wheels need to be 4-5" is dia or the same dia as mid-way along the tipper back, IMHO....
PLUS a little more detail especially around the front.
    Cheers, crowie

    Default Great tips guys.

    Hi

Great tips guys. More detail is coming crowie - it is not glued at the moment. Does anyone have suggestions where I can get wheels of that size? My skills are not advanced enough to make wheels like that with tread. I was planning on turning a piece of timber to make the right size wheels but won't be able to make them like the original. PS I moonlight on the turning part of the forums as well but don't tell anyone.

Why not start with a cheap holesaw set?

Hi Yonnee - I have a hole saw set but it doesn't go up to that size.

    G'Day Todd,
I've sent you a "how to make highway wheels" pdf file on your email, I hope it helps.
Holesaws aren't too expensive, just buy the size that suits & make sure you slow the drill press down accordingly.

    Default New Wheels

    Hi

I have made some new wheels. Had some hoop pine and turned it on the lathe to a cylinder, cut it into sections, put it back on the lathe and cut some treads, recessed the wheels and drilled the axle holes. Looks a lot better I think. Still working on the detail.

Let me know what you think.

    Default I like it

Looks just fine to me. Let's know how you did the wheels. Are they turned and painted? Do you only glue your parts or use brads etc where possible. Up til now I have only glued but have not had to assemble as many parts as you have on your dumper.

    Hi,

The wheels were turned on the lathe - large lump of hoop pine. Turned to a cylinder and then cut into segments with a spigot on the end. They were then cut and each individual wheel put into a 4 jaw chuck and the tread cut. Then recessed the wheel and drilled the axle hole. Painted centre first and then put masking tape to cover yellow. finished off with black. Also painted the axle pegs. I use glue and nails. I punch the nails down and then putty, sand and paint.
