Default Mobile Crane from Construction Series of Wood Magazine with a couple of modifications

With the Tough Tipper completed I asked the elder grandson "What should pa do next" and the reply was ''a crane pa, please''.
So a crane it is, I already had the plans for one.
''Mobile Crane'' from Construction Series of Wood Magazine, with a couple of modifications, as the grandsons like to drive the wooden toys around the house so the crane has to have a drivers cabin.
The plan doesn't have a cab, so at the end of the Tough Tipper thread I asked the question and made the following decision.
Pogo, aka Bob in the Netherlands suggested looking through the Liebherr Mobile Crane website to help with the scaling of the drivers cabin. https://www.woodworkforums.com/f174/t...98/index8.html
I settled on the 70tonne All-terrain mobile crane as it looked the best match. LTM 1070-4.2.
The website has a full technical ''pdf file'' for the measurements....great!!
I added to the chassis length in the plan about 3 1/2'' to allow for it.
I've spent some 5-6 hours to select a good mix of timbers, resizing, cutting and marking out, along with the sourcing of hardware.
I've attached a few photos of the ''cutting list'' prepared to get started.
    I also have another issue.
If I let my little mate, ''Handy'' have too long a break, I'll have waste months training him and have to do a whole heap of retraining......you all know what the young ones are like these days but otherwise he's a pretty good help now we're getting back to it, with of course the daily toolbox talks & safety tips.
    Cheers, crowie

Great to see that Handy Smurf is on board with the crane build.
I don't know why but for some reason seeing him in the pictures makes me
    think of Jeff Hook.
It's probably because I keep look in each of your photo's to find him.

But I think artme may be right we could be in for a crane throw down!
Looking forward to seeing it come together mate.

    Trevor.

Nice, I have decided to make mine as it goes. The boom extended will be about 1m. Got a question though...hollow dowels, are they made? For wooden hydraulic rams.

    Cheers,

    Steve.

    G'Day Steve,
The boom on the one I'm doing is semi-fixed so no rams to worry about.
On hollowing out for a ram....
Either a 3 jaw chuck on the lathe with a drill in the tail-stock...
Or as I do for drilling out dowels; I clamp the dowel into a vee block on the pedestal drill, mark the centre with a centre finder and get reasonable results.
Maybe the blocks who do the scale models can give you other suggestions...
    Cheers, crowie

Sorry Gents, It's no competition, as Steve wins hands down from my point of view, as he's a scratch builder.....

Trevor, I'm no world famous Tasmanian Cartoonist who'd be about 84 years old now; just having some fun with a little bloke keeping me company.

    Cheers, crowie

    Default Some progress from yesterday....

    Some progress from yesterday....
Glued the drivers cabin to the chassis.
Put a new 3tpi 1/2'' blade on the bandsaw to cut the drivers cabin on the chassis, WOW what a different; then sanded it.
I drilled all the holes in the mast; jolly Australian Red Gum from an old telegraph pole was as hard as nails & I'm sure the forstner bit is now a lot blunt.
    Glued the mast together.
Shaped the mast base sides & drilled the holes in it.
Worked out I need to by a 11/32" brad point drill bit for the wheel axle pegs BUT the local Bunnings don't carry anything like that; I'll be in Penrith tomorrow for a medical appointment so can have a look at the local tool shops while there.
The 3" 'Lazy Susan' is on it's way thanks to my daughters "PayPal" account & eBay; got it from a bearing company in Ballarat [great service from them, too].
Once it's in place I can do an engine compartment behind the drivers cabin, add some headlights and taillights along with the assembly of the mast bast and base.
There's a lot of work to keep handy busy..
    Cheers, crowie
