Nice work on the truck so far.

Day 2. Thanks for the info re the Pics, I'll see what I can do when I have the time.

Step 1. Make the engine bonnet and radiator. I like to use pieces from my "left-overs bin" where possible and in this instance glued some Pine to a piece of Kapur (height and colour contrast). The radiator is a piece of Sapelle with backyard Jacaranda tree grill. When all glued together, cut on bandsaw to shape, sanded and radiator cap (axle peg end) fitted then glued to body.

Step 2. Cut wheel guards from a piece of NG Rosewood, using leftover to make front / engine infill. Wheel guards are each 3/4 inch wide so 1 @ 2 inch wide guard made and actual guards cut from the single piece. Same with the infill piece. When cut and measurements checked guard and infill glued together and sanded. Top-side edge routered with 1/4inch round-over bit. Guards test fitted (you beauty mate!) and set aside.

Step 3. Plans call for a water tank to be fitted to the rear and that the tank be solid timber. I intend installing a fire hose in the tank so I will need to plan for a hollow tank. Tonight's exercise.

PS: I am careful with the timbers I use as I do not paint my toys / models, only finish with Danish Oil. Hence the colour and grain is very important if the toy is too look any good.

Day 3. Unfortunately, none of Crowie's little helpers visited my shed overnight so I shall continue with the build.

Step 1. Design the construction of the water tank, 8 pieces of timber (not including the ends), with 6 of the pieces cut at a 15 degree angle. Cut, sand and glue together. Used NG Rosewood and Pine.

Step 2. Drill and fit recess for tank Filler Cap and ladder pivot with a forstner bit and hole saw. Filler Cap is Sapelle, I know it will oil to a deep dark brown colour.

Step 4. Drill hole (10 mm) for Fire Hose (1/4 inch dia), cut tube for Fire Hose and stoper one end. l plan for the Fire Hose to be simply pushed into the Water Tank cavity when not in use rather than use a winder mechanism to coil the Hose. Applied the KISS principle (Keep it Simple and Sturdy).

Step 5. Cut out the Ladder frames and drill ladder rung holes for 6 mm dowel. Ladder frame is Blackbutt and rungs to be Pine dowel. I have opted for hidden rung holes (5 mm deep) rather than through holes as I of the opinion the hidden holes will make for a stronger finish.

Step 6. Dry fit and all is still snug and square.

Day 4. Final day. Made basic but strong wheels from Yellow Ballou, turned Fire Hose nozzle and fitted together with nozzle holder, made and fitted Bumpers from Budgeroo (glued and pinned) and made and fitted side guard supports for underneath the vehicle. All glued together and ready for oiling.

When finished the Fire Truck, together with its cousins (Tow Truck, Ute and Coupe) will be donated to my local Mens Shed to assist with its fund raising activities. The Tow Truck is my next toy to be made but I will not labour you with that build.
