more models
whilst i haven't posted recently, i have still been doing a bit although i did get sidetracked by a couple of trips away and, mentally, stayed on holiday a bit longer .. a couple of jewellery boxes a couple of coffee tables and here, a couple more of the toys and joys models .. the 1932 plymouth and 1932 buick
the buick in jarrah with silky oak accents and the plymouth in tulip oak with an unknown red wood which came out of a 50 year old house my mate was renovating (his wife noticed some interesting pieces and set them aside for me) ... the roof and headlights of the plymouth are jacaranda that i got from mapleman on the forum

Great job on the models and the colours work nicely together. Could the red wood be Red Gum or Sydney Bluegum?
Good to have a holiday and keep a balance between what we have to do and what we want to do.Dallas

thanks ... could be blue gum indeed ... i haven't really thought about what it is ... the house is in canberra and i assume that they would have used something reasonably local at the time although that may not be right .. although reasonably hard and red, it doesn't have quite the density or rich colour of other redgum that i have ... although it can be a bit brittle in thinner dimensions as some of the older (90 yo fence palings) redgum i have is

the buick (spoked) wheels are bought ones ... i am currently experimenting with making some spoked wheels though
the plymouth wheels (whitewalls) are a combination of holesaw and wood lathe ... for them i used a pen mandrel which is 6mm (the holes are quarter inch) and lock nutted them with a spare brass nut

Hi David... As I understand it, you use a 6mm pen mandrel as the axle and a push on metal cap to hold the wheel in place.
I make basic toy cars with wooden wheels and 6mm axles, one piece body, 2 axles, 4 wheels and a wooden turned "driver".

no sorry ... i used the mandrel to hold them on the lathe
the axles are just dowels and yes two dowels with fixed wheels (wheels glued to axles) ... the caps are wood spraypainted with silver paint and are just for show
i use an oversize hole through the body of the car say 5/16 which allows a bit of up and down play so that if any of my work is inexact, all four wheels can hit the ground at the same time ... i used individual axle pegs on 1929 ford truck a couple of years ago and the front left wheel sits 3/32nds off the ground
if that is not clear, send a pm and i will try to clarify
regards david

Hi David
Now my poor tired old brain understands. I never thought of leaving the axle a bit longer and painting the end silver. I shall have to get cracking and "fancy up" my little cars. All my cars are 32mm wide and use a single axle each end with the wheels glued on and painted black.
I love the Fuel truck. I have some plans for cars and trucks that are a bit (much) more complicated than anything I have done so far.
Your models have inspired me to have a go .....
