Motorcycles with Sidecars
Wooden motorcycles with sidecars.jpgIMG_0259.jpg
This one is a tribute to Fletty and those wonderful motorcycles that he produced for his grandchildren.
I loved them when he put them up on the forum and then of course had to have a go at making some for my own grandies.
I spend three mornings each week at the local Men's Shed (T.O.Y.S. at the Clarence Park Community Centre, SA) and the motorcycles were also much admired there (although I did get sick of people suggesting that each one needed a stand). The upshot of it was that I then turned out a motorcycle with sidecar. Great hit.
Each school holidays we spend one morning with "Woodworms", about 8 kids 8-10yrs old so that they can have a bit of a go at making and assembling something out of wood. This time (yesterday), they got to assemble motorcycles with sidecars. Whilst I'd love to be able to get them to do a lot more of the construction work, time (2 hrs.) precludes it Anyway, they each got to glue and screw together their bikes and then cut out some fridge magnets and large initials out of MDF using the scrollsaws and small 1" belt sanders. God knows what we are going to have to come up with next school holidays, but there's a little time before that becomes an issue. Last time we had them make rubber band powered cars and the time before that it was a small "Crayon" truck. The kids seem to really enjoy themselves (boys and girls) and we don't have any problems in getting numbers each time.
Cheers

What a great little project. I'm sure the kids had a great time putting them together.

Excellent stuff.
I don't think there is anything quite like the look in a child's eyes when they first see a new toy or they make their own. Keep up the good work with your fellow Shedders!

They are little works of art! Very nice. I like your inventive ways to get kids into woodwork.
In the picture it looks like you are selling them. I'd like to know more about that too.

Dave
I do make toys, including the motorcycles, for sale through the Mens Shed. Proceeds go to help keeping the shed running, as we pay no fees and we do have a paid Co-ordinator. However, the motorcycles on the bench were those that the kids assembled last Wednesday and the single one on its own was one I whipped up for our Co-ordinator, Sharon. We make toys at the shed as well as repair puzzles and toys that people bring us, as well as those from Toy Libraries etc. I prefer working on the toys as I find it a bit mind-numbing at times trying to make replacement parts for jigsaw puzzles. Oh, by the way, we have a few female members who do an absolute fantastic job with painting then replacement parts.
Cheers

Love these little bikes with side cars, this is how I now have started to look at things to make in the future, smaller than normal, simple as possible yet with just enough detail to gets a child's/adults attention. Love them, very well done.
Regards Kev.

Great work.
What size wheels are they for a perspective?

Cava, Just over 55mm in diameter, mate. They were made using one of the Carbatec wheel cutters. I wasn't impressed with the wheels when I made them out of straight timber, but by using thick plywood, they really come to life, especially with a few holes drilled around the hub to give it a "mag wheel" effect
