Natural toys?
Hi everyone, I've recently been seeing a lot of people selling 'natural tree' toys for kids, things like these

I was wondering, do people really just get a bracnch from the back yard, cut it, sand it and sell it? Obviously there's drying involved but does anyone have any knowledge of any dressing that is done? Do they protect the natural edges with something, or oil/shellac the faces at all? The pictures suggest they don't, and most people that do these are big on natural and organic things, so I doubt they'd want to use varnishes or similar anyway.
I only ask out of curiosity really...a bag of blocks goes for about $60, and it seems a bit extreme if all they're doing is chopping and sanding...Granted, these type of things below have some more work and finesse involved, but I still think they're over priced compared to some of the more traditional wooden toys...unless of course there's something I'm missing...hence the question.

Any thoughts?

G'Day Krafter,
Have a look at Cooroy Toymakers postings as he's done a lot of that sort of toymaking.....

Crowie is right. Check out that site and i think you will see that there is more than you think to this work.
Sometimes the reaction of people astounds me when they see some woodwork and have no appreciation of what is involved.
A common reaction is "What!? For a few bits of wood!!?"
Don't fall into the trap of becoming a Philistine.

No danger of that Artme. Hence the post!
Thanks Crowie or the link, I have got in touch with Cooroy and he's given me some great tips
I always appreciated the art and skill in the style and the treehouses and miniature furniture etc is amazing, I can't wait to have a go myself now Cooroy has pointed me in the right direction. I do still think the building blocks themselves are somewhat over priced, but the actual creations are awesome.
Cheers everyone

Krafter
a bag of blocks is only overpriced if it doesn't sell.
your observation is that they do sell, hence they can't be overpriced.Last edited by ian; 1st August 2013 at 12:07 AM. Reason: spelling / punctuation
