Cool New Plans for an Excavator

I had plans to build a High Gear Bull Dozer but Dutch out Of Holland just came out with a new Excavator plan so will be trying my hand at his new project.

I'm starting on the tracks as this is what I'm the most interested in building.

There are a ton a little parts to get the tracks made and jigs are the best and safest way to get it done.

Then need to shape the guides that go under the tracks.
    IMG_5398.JPGIMG_5399.JPG

There are over 200 small parts for the track linkage and every one needs two holes for the tooth pick pivot points, and here again a jig helps speed thinks up..

    Parts and more parts.

    IMG_5403.jpgIMG_5405.jpg

Then I finally got to start playing with the base.

Tomorrow I'll cut out some treads and should be able to see how this will all work out.

Looks like you have started on the right track Bruce or is that the left track.

Count me in for watching the progress

Nice work on this. How did you do the "rollers" in the pics, are they individually turned annd then glued on?

KBs These are store bought wheels drilled to 1/4 then sanded on my disk sander jig to just fit in the space.
I think I'll come up with some plug for the centers but we'll see what needs done.
On the Toys and Joys plans the wheels really worked to guide the tracks but here the guide is done differently.
I have a Hobby Lobby just down the road and they have all kinds of small wood turning and wheels so love reshaping them for other uses.

Thanks for that, very useful information.
I modify Forstner bits to do something similar, when shaping the centre of wheels.
Looking forward to the rest of the build.

Oneye Having built a Toys and Joys excavator and the smaller Bull dozer I've used their track set up and with jigs theirs to me is a little easier to make but not nearly through with this one so we'll see how it turns out in the end.
I do believe with the treads Dutchy's will look out standing but this tread could be added to the T&J tracks for the same effect.

Still working on the tracks and made some treads.
Need I say it there's a bunch a parts to this thing.
The bolts are just a place holder for now, there will be no metal in this build.
