    Default Prime Mover

Except for my lay up through health problems you may have noticed the lack of projects from me well this is what I have been working on.

The completed Prime mover is now finished. This took longer than expected due to the health problems, but I was not going to give in. I had a rough count and I think there are 9 or 10 different woods in the build. I did not want to use any stains or paints that is why I use as many different coloured woods where I can.

Don't ask how long it took as I don't keep a record of that side of things. I enjoyed the build and just have to say the glue on the wheels has not even dried when I took the photo's. I hope I have managed to get as much in as possible with the photo's

    It measures 15 3/4" long X 5 1/2" wide X 7 3/4" to the top of the stacks

Very nice build and top job on the photography too. Looks like you spent a fair bit of time setting it up.

I'm a bit slow on this one Derek, Everyone one has got in ahead of me giving you some well deserved compliments on this magnificent truck/prime mover.
You can see all the beautiful detailing and finish of a first class master craftsman....First place Cup - 1903.jpg...certainly a winner.
    Cheers, Peter

Fantastic!. You can't beat plain wood for a build.

    Thank you all.

I like using just the natural colour of the wood on many of my builds even though I have in the past coloured some. It is good just to be back in the shed and I now can get onto the half track I started a while ago as well as some turning which I also enjoy

Normally I make a WIP on my builds but not on this one, I have taken photo's of this build and as some of you know I write articles for "The Woodworker" magazine and the build of this is heading that way as well. Now I need to get and sort the photo's and do the write up.

I have a very basic set up of a photographic paper roll which I managed to get off of freecycle here in the UK which started as 10' long and cut it down to shorter lengths so it fitted onto a clothes rail and the camera is a Finepix F80 EXR. So as you can see nothing special a white sheet could be used instead of the photographic back drop paper. The main adjustment I do is set the white balance to the white background and not take any photo's in direct sunlight to eliminate to harsh a shadows

Even if you don't want to go as far as a sheet just pick a background that is not cluttered with too much stuff which is what distracts peoples eyes away from what you are trying to photograph and not too dark a background as well

    G'day Dalboy,

Fantastic build, envious of your door outlines etc. I have a wood burner for such jobs yet to have a go on some scrap timber. Have some crazy ideas on how to use it and not stuff things up, yes some crazy ideas!!!!!!!!!!! I love seein' great built wooden trucks.

The plans I worked from had thin bits of ply stuck in place for the doors and as the original truck would have had flush fitting doors I decided to go with the pyrography machine that I use on my wood turning. i drew the outline with a pencil and the free handed the burning.
Don't just put the burner straight onto the wood and then draw the line as you will end up with a black dot at the beginning and end, try to start moving the burner first then lower to the line and continue along again when finishing keep the pen moving and lift so it comes off at the end point that way there is no dots at the ends.
