    Pete,

Have you got a mate with a metal lathe. That's how I reduce the shank size if needed. You could perhaps try a specialist tool supply place - or even ask at Repco

    Regards

Thank you for the offer, Keith, BUT no metalwork lathe.
I'd be happy for either a twist drill or brad point bit to use as the pilot drill for the profiles toy wheel cutter.
The standard pilot drill is 1/4" and often I'm have to re-drill the centre hole as 5/16" or 3/8" for the wheel axle and I thought if I could just get a 1/4" reduced shank drill bit I'd save a couple of steps and ensure the hole was correctly centred.
I'm doing an internet search as well but just thought the local brains trust might have a local Aussie solution/supplier for me..

The only bits I can find have the 1/4" hex mounting like these but I don't believe they will be of any use to you. You are also after imperial drills which are almost extinct in brad point.
I did reply in your other thread if that helps.

    Hi Crowie

was that US$5 ea for a packet of 8, or US$5 each and you have to buy a packet which is 8 drills ($40).

I ask because the other day I was looking for a specific jig saw blade and was quoted $20 per pack of 3, minimum order 10 packs.
    regards from Alberta, Canada

    Crowie,

Depending on your exact requirement, thought 8mm and 9.5mm should be a short bee's penis close enough. They use the quick change end with a brad point (similar to Dalla's suggestion), are absolutely brilliant though not cheap, but then again, Japanese made. I have built up a set of these and now have a box full of old bits gathering rust.

I remember back in the 60's when we frowned on "Made in Japan" insignia... now days I'll kill for it.

    Hi Peter,
I think that the problem will be,that the turned down section, won't be long enough to go through the wheel cutter and into the chuck. From memory, the turned down section is only about 25mm long, so even if you got hold of them, it would still require someone to turn them down further for you.

at the risk of engaging in "dangerous thoughts" ...

is opening up the wheel cutter's arbor to accept a 5/16 or 3/8 bit an option?
