    Default Rocking Horses

These are some of the rocking horses I have carved over the last 23 years.

When my kids were little, 40 years ago I made the typical rocking horse for them made from boards on a safety frame rocker.

I always had it in mind to carve a proper English style rocking horse on bows and to that end purchased a book called "Rocking Horse Maker" by Anthony Dew, If anyone is thinking of carving a horse I highly recommend this book for beginners it has plans and several designs its still available for under $20, if making bow rockers I recommend reducing the curve to slow the rocking motion.
All my early horses are influenced by the book, later years I drew my own patterns.

My first attempt which I still have was this #5 dapple grey, I built it from off cuts I had in my workshop, I made the stirrups, bit etc from scrap brass, the mane & tail are quality synthetic wig hair. I now have made moulds for the stirrups and have them cast in bronze.
dapple.jpgcarriage 2.jpgThe baby carriage really is ornamental because of the wooden wheels, it has had a 7 year old in it, when being pushed, she steered it with the reins while the horses oscillate up & down, the horses are #4 NZ rimu.
The buttoned upholstery was done by a friend.
These plywood horses are made from furniture manufacturing off cuts they are sizes 4,5,6. Size 4 recycled Aus hardwood & unicorn.

Size 6 Aus hardwood made from recycled house framing laminated, this was extremely hard to carve.

    Thumbs up

After seeing you marvelouse work I can only guess that your workshop has been turned into a stable with sawdust and shavings on the floor without the droppings.
I can only admire your work with an appreciation of your skill.

    Look forward to seeing more.

Some great horses from the simple to the more complex. I would like to make another at some time but it is a case of what to do with it once complete.

    Default Incredible workmanship

What an amazing talent! The making of all these horses is one thing, but to do the intricate carving moves them into the next world.

Thank you for sharing your achievements with us.
